Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) This report is "sahih" (authentic). The narrators of this chain are acceptable (la ba'sa bihim, "there is no harm in them").
Technical note / Defect ('illah): What is "mahfuz" (preserved, correct) in it is that it is from Zayd bin Aslam, from his father Aslam, the freed slave (mawla) of Umar bin al-Khattab, so it is "muttasil" (connected). This story of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has been narrated through several routes.
Note / Clarification: "Sharik" refers to: Ibn Abdullah al-Nakha'i.
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym recorded it in "Tarikh Asbahan" (1/ 228), and through him Ibn Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (21/ 162-163), through the route of Ali bin Hakim al-Awdi; and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (6/ 184) through the route of Ishaq bin Isa bin al-Tabba'. Both of them narrate from Sharik al-Nakha'i, from Jami' bin Abi Rashid, from Zayd bin Aslam, from his father. Thus they mentioned "Aslam, the freed slave of Umar bin al-Khattab".
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (6/ 552), Ahmad in "al-Zuhd" (130), Abd bin Humayd (42), Abu Ya'la (167), al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (3268) and Ibn Abd al-Barr in "al-Tamhid" (5/ 85) recorded it in "abridged" form, with the story of Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), through the route of Hisham bin Sa'd, from Zayd bin Aslam, from his father, from Umar bin al-Khattab.
Grading: Its chain is "hasan" (good) in corroborations and supporting reports because of Hisham bin Sa'd, and Jami' bin Abi Rashid corroborated him in the route of the author (al-Hakim) and others.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Zayd bin Aslam has another shaykh in this narration. Ma'mar bin Rashid recorded it in "al-Jami'" (20044) and Malik in "al-Muwatta'" (2/ 998), both of them from Zayd bin Aslam, from Ata' bin Yasar, as "mursal".
Reference / Source: The story of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was also recorded by Ahmad in his "Musnad" (1/ 100), al-Bukhari (7163), Muslim (1045), Abu Dawud (1647) and al-Nasa'i (2397-2399) through the route of Abdullah bin al-Sa'di; and by Ahmad (10/ 5748), al-Bukhari (1473, 7164), Muslim (1045) and al-Nasa'i (2400) through the route of Abdullah bin Umar bin al-Khattab, both of them narrating from Umar bin al-Khattab.
Details of the narration: Ibn al-Sa'di also mentioned about himself something like the story of Sa'id bin Amir: that he used to carry out some official duties for Umar bin al-Khattab, and Umar wanted to give him a stipend (rizq) but he refused, so Umar said to him the same thing that he had said to Sa'id.
Note / Clarification: "tashrah nafsuka": that is, your soul becomes intensely greedy.
