It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked about al-Kawthar, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is a river that Allah has given me in Paradise. Its soil is musk; it is whiter than milk and sweeter than honey. Birds come to it whose necks are like the necks of camels." Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Messenger of Allah, they must be very tender and delicate. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Those who eat them will be even more tender and delicate than them."
Imam Muslim recorded this hadith from Abd al-Wahid bin Ziyad, from al-Mukhtar bin Fulful, from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), in the narration of when "Indeed, We have given you (al-Kawthar)" [Surah al-Kawthar: 1] was revealed, which is more complete and longer; but I have recorded it among the solitary narrations of Asim bin Ali, because Abu Uways is trustworthy! And we do not know of any other musnad hadith from al-Zuhri from his brother besides this one, and this is well known as the hadith of Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Muslim from his father.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning "Indeed, We have given you al-Kawthar" [Surah al-Kawthar: 1], that he said: "Al-Kawthar is the abundant good that Allah has given him (peace and blessings be upon him)." Abu Bishr says: I said to Sa'id bin Jubayr: People claim that it is a river in Paradise. He said: "That river is also part of the abundant good."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it. As for the words of Allah Almighty: "So pray to your Lord and sacrifice" [Surah al-Kawthar: 2], the Companions differed in its interpretation, and the best of it is what has been narrated from the Commander of the Believers, Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him), in two narrations. The first of them is this:
