It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning the saying of Allah Almighty, from "O you who believe, do not take My enemy and your enemy as allies, extending affection to them" up to "And Allah is All-Seeing of what you do" [Al-Mumtahanah: 1-3]: This was revealed concerning Hatib bin Abi Balta'ah and those with him writing to the disbelievers of Quraysh and warning them (of the Muslims' intentions). And the saying of Allah, "except the saying of Ibrahim" [Al-Mumtahanah: 4]: in it the Muslims were forbidden to follow Ibrahim (peace be upon him) in seeking forgiveness for his father, that is, they should not pray for forgiveness for the polytheists. And the saying of Allah, "Our Lord, do not make us a trial for those who disbelieve" [Al-Mumtahanah: 5], means: Do not punish us at their hands, nor afflict us with a punishment from Yourself, so that they begin to say: If these people were upon the truth, this hardship would not have befallen them.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.
