Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3846

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: Qutaylah bint Abd al-Uzza bin As'ad, who was from Banu Malik bin Hisl, came to her daughter Sayyidah Asma bint Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with her). Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) had divorced her in the pre-Islamic era of ignorance. She brought her daughter gifts of lizards, ghee and dried cheese, but Sayyidah Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) refused to accept the gifts from her or to let her into her house, until she sent word to Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) to ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about it. She informed him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered her to accept her gifts and let her into her house. Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "Allah does not forbid you from those who did not fight you because of religion and did not expel you from your homes, that you should be kind to them", up to the end of the two verses [Al-Mumtahanah: 8, 9].
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: Its chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this chain there is the jahalah (being unknown) of Abd Allah bin Ali al-Ghazzal and the weakness of Mus'ab bin Thabit.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad recorded it in his Musnad (26/16111).
Details of the narration: Imam Ahmad narrated it from Arim Muhammad bin al-Fadl, from Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak, from Mus'ab bin Thabit, from his paternal uncle Amir bin Abd Allah bin al-Zubayr, from his father.
Important point: The basis of this story is established from the hadith of Asma' (may Allah be pleased with her) herself; she said: My mother (who was a polytheist) came to me in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), desiring (my kindness), so I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Should I maintain ties with her? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes".
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (5978) and Muslim (1003) recorded it.
Note / Clarification: Sufyan bin Uyaynah (as in al-Bukhari's narration) said that it was concerning her that Allah the Exalted revealed this verse: ﴿لَا يَنْهَاكُمُ اللَّهُ … ﴾ to the end of the verse.
