Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3845

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning the saying of Allah Almighty, "There has certainly been for you in them an excellent example" [Al-Mumtahanah: 6], that he said: "In all the deeds of Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) there is an excellent example (for you), except his seeking forgiveness for his father while he was a polytheist."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts available to us the verse ﴿لَقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِيهِمْ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ﴾ [Indeed, there has been for you in them an excellent example] is written, whereas this is verse number (21) of Surat al-Ahzab; we have retained in the text the verse that is in Surat al-Mumtahanah, as in the printed edition and "Ithaf al-Maharah" (7592). This is correct and agrees with the context of the narration.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): All the narrators of this chain are thiqah, except that the hearing of Jarir (who is Ibn Abd al-Hamid) from Ata' bin al-Sa'ib was after his ikhtilat (deterioration of memory). Ishaq is Ishaq bin Rahawayh.
Reference / Source: Imam al-Suyuti (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned it in "al-Durr al-Manthur" and also attributed it to Ibn al-Mundhir and Ibn Abi Hatim.
