It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) that a monk used to worship in his hermitage. A woman enticed him towards herself, so that he committed fornication with her and she became pregnant. Then Satan came to him and said: Kill her, for if people come to know of it, you will be disgraced. So he killed her and buried her. Then people came, seized him and began to take him away. While they were still going, Satan came to him and said: It was I who urged you to this sin; now prostrate to me once and I will save you from this calamity. So he prostrated to him. Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "Like Satan, when he says to man: Disbelieve. But when he disbelieves, he says: I am disassociated from you." [Al-Hashr: 16]
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

5/ 47. Grading: Its chain can possibly be graded "hasan" on account of the narrator who narrates from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the narration of Ishaq from Abd al-Razzaq, this narrator's name is given as "Humayd bin Abd Allah", which is an error (wahm), since no narrator of this name is found in the biographical books. The correct and preserved (mahfuz) name is "Nahik bin Abd Allah" or "Abd Allah bin Nahik". Reference / Source: See Tabaqat Ibn Sa'd (8/ 362), Tarikh al-Bukhari (5/ 213) and al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil (5/ 183 and 8/ 497). Abu Ishaq and his son Yunus narrated from this Nahik, and Ibn Hibban included him in "al-Thiqat" (5/ 47). (3748). Technical note / Defect ('illah): "Ishaq" in the chain refers to Imam Ishaq bin Rahawayh. Reference / Source: This report is in his "Musnad", as mentioned in al-Busiri's "Ithaf al-Khiyarah" (5857) and Ibn Hajar's "al-Matalib al-'Aliyah" (3748). Reference / Source: Imam al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (5067) through Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain. Reference / Source: It is in "Tafsir Abd al-Razzaq" (2/ 285) in the narration of Muhammad bin Hammad al-Tihrani, transmitted through the chain Sufyan al-Thawri from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i from Nahik bin Abd Allah al-Saluli from Ali. Reference / Source: Imam al-Bukhari recorded it in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" 5/ 213 and Imam al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" 28/ 49 through the chain al-Nadr bin Shumayl from Shu'bah from Abu Ishaq, in which Abu Ishaq says that he heard Abd Allah bin Nahik say that he heard Ali. Details of the narration: A similar story was narrated by Sufyan bin Uyaynah through Amr bin Dinar from Urwah bin Amir from Ubayd bin Rifa'ah, who traces it to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Reference / Source: Ibn Abi al-Dunya recorded it in "Makayid al-Shaytan" (61) and al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (5066). Grading: Its narrators are thiqah, but it is "mursal", because it is said about Ubayd bin Rifa'ah that he was born in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) but did not have the honour of companionship (he is a Tabi'i).
