It is narrated from Sayyidah Umm al-Ala' al-Ansariyyah (may Allah be pleased with her), who had given the pledge of allegiance to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), that she said: When the Ansar drew lots for housing the Muhajirun, the lot of Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz'un (may Allah be pleased with him) fell to stay with us. Then he fell ill, and we nursed him until he passed away, and we wrapped him in his shroud. She said: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came in, and I said (addressing the deceased): "O Abu al-Sa'ib, may the mercy of Allah be upon you; my testimony is that Allah has certainly honoured you." On hearing this the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "How do you know that?" I said: "By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I do not know." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "As for him, certainty (death) has come to him, and I hope for good for him from Allah." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "Say: I am not something new among the messengers, and I do not know what will be done with me or with you" [Surah al-Ahqaf: 9]. Umm al-Ala' said: "By Allah, I will never again declare anyone (definitively) pure after him." Umm al-Ala' said: I saw in a dream a flowing spring belonging to Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), so I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned it to him, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That is his deed, which continues to flow for him."
The two Shaykhs differed over recording this hadith: Imam Bukhari narrated it from Abdan in abridged form, while Imam Muslim did not record it.

It is narrated from Safwan bin Abdullah bin Safwan that he said: Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) asked permission to visit Ibn Amir while there were silk cushions beneath him. Ibn Amir gave an order and they were removed. Then Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) entered, wearing a cloak of silk and wool. Ibn Amir said to him: "You asked permission to see me while there were silk cushions beneath me, so I ordered them to be removed." Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "O Ibn Amir, what an excellent man you are, provided you are not among those about whom Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: 'You exhausted your good things in your worldly life' [Surah al-Ahqaf: 20]. By Allah, lying on burning embers is dearer to me than lying on them (the silk cushions)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it, and it is supported by the hadith of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw a dirham in the hand of Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) and asked: "What is this dirham?" He said: "I want to buy a dirham's worth of meat for my family, for they have a great craving for it." At this Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Whenever you crave something, do you buy it? Does none of you want to fold his stomach (go hungry) for the sake of his cousin and his neighbour? Where has this verse gone from you: 'You exhausted your good things in your worldly life and took your enjoyment of them' [Surah al-Ahqaf: 20]?"
