Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3739

It is narrated from Safwan bin Abdullah bin Safwan that he said: Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) asked permission to visit Ibn Amir while there were silk cushions beneath him. Ibn Amir gave an order and they were removed. Then Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) entered, wearing a cloak of silk and wool. Ibn Amir said to him: "You asked permission to see me while there were silk cushions beneath me, so I ordered them to be removed." Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "O Ibn Amir, what an excellent man you are, provided you are not among those about whom Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said: 'You exhausted your good things in your worldly life' [Surah al-Ahqaf: 20]. By Allah, lying on burning embers is dearer to me than lying on them (the silk cushions)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it, and it is supported by the hadith of Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him).
