Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3740

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw a dirham in the hand of Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) and asked: "What is this dirham?" He said: "I want to buy a dirham's worth of meat for my family, for they have a great craving for it." At this Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Whenever you crave something, do you buy it? Does none of you want to fold his stomach (go hungry) for the sake of his cousin and his neighbour? Where has this verse gone from you: 'You exhausted your good things in your worldly life and took your enjoyment of them' [Surah al-Ahqaf: 20]?"

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This report is "sahih", but this chain is "very weak" because of al-Qasim bin Abd Allah, since he is matruk, and al-Dhahabi declared him weak in "al-Talkhis".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: However, he is not alone in narrating it; the report is well known and has been narrated through several routes from Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: Abu Dawud recorded it in "al-Zuhd" (64) and al-Tabari in "Tahdhib al-Athar" (p. 718-719) via Abd Allah bin Wahb, from Abd Allah bin Umar al-Umari, from Wahb bin Kaysan, from Jabir bin Abd Allah, who said: Umar met me while I had some meat with me …
Grading: Its narrators are thiqah except Abd Allah al-Umari, in whom there is weakness, but his hadith is acceptable in corroborations.
Reference / Source: Malik recorded it in "al-Muwatta" (2/ 936), and al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (5284), from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari, that Umar came upon Jabir …
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is "mursal".
Reference / Source: Abd al-Razzaq (2/ 216), Ibn Abi Shaybah (8/ 315) and Ahmad in "al-Zuhd" (653) also recorded it with chains containing unnamed narrators.
Grading: Through the combination of all these chains the report is strengthened and, Allah willing, is deemed "sahih".
Note / Clarification: "Qarimu ilayh" means: they craved it intensely. "Al-qaram" means an intense craving for meat.
