حدثني محمد بن صالح بن هانئ، حدثنا أبو سعيد محمد بن شاذان، حدثني أحمد بن سعيد الدارِمي، حدثنا علي بن الحسين بن واقدٍ، حدثني أَبي، عن الرَّبيع بن أنس، عن أبي العاليَةِ، عن أُبيِّ بن كعب قال: لما قَدِمَ رسولُ الله ﷺ وأصحابُه المدينةَ وآوَتْهم الأنصارُ، رَمَتْهم العربُ عن قوسٍ واحدة، كانوا لا يَبِيتون إلَّا بالسلاح ولا يُصبِحون إلَّا فيه، فقالوا: تُرَونَ أنّا نعيشُ حتى نبيتَ آمنين مطمئنِّين لا نخافُ إِلَّا الله؟! فنزلت: ﴿وَعَدَ اللَّهُ الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا مِنْكُمْ وَعَمِلُوا الصَّالِحَاتِ لَيَسْتَخْلِفَنَّهُمْ فِي الْأَرْضِ كَمَا اسْتَخْلَفَ الَّذِينَ مِنْ قَبْلِهِمْ وَلَيُمَكِّنَنَّ لَهُمْ دِينَهُمُ الَّذِي ارْتَضَى لَهُمْ وَلَيُبَدِّلَنَّهُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ خَوْفِهِمْ أَمْنًا﴾ إلى ﴿وَمَنْ كَفَرَ بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ﴾ يعني بالنِّعمة ﴿فَأُولَئِكَ هُمُ الْفَاسِقُونَ﴾ [النور: 55] (1).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and his Companions came to Madinah and the Ansar gave them shelter, all the Arabs shot at them from a single bow (that is, united in hostility against them). Their condition was such that they would not spend the night without weapons, nor would they rise in the morning without weapons. So the Companions said: "Do you think we will ever live such a life that we spend the night in safety and tranquility, fearing no one but Allah?" Then this verse was revealed: "Allah has promised those among you who believe and do righteous deeds that He will surely grant them succession in the land, just as He granted it to those before them, and that He will surely establish for them their religion which He has approved for them, and that He will surely exchange their state of fear for security" [Surah al-Nur: 55]. And He said: "And whoever disbelieves after that," that is, whoever is ungrateful for this blessing, "then it is they who are the defiantly disobedient" [Surah al-Nur: 55].

حدثنا أبو بكر بن أبي دارِمٍ الحافظ، حدثنا أحمد بن موسى التميمي (2)، حدثنا مِنجابُ بن الحارث، حدثنا أبو بكر بن عيَّاش، عن أبي حَصِين، عن أبي عبد الرحمن السُّلَمي، عن علي في قوله: ﴿لِيَسْتَأْذِنْكُمُ الَّذِينَ مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُكُمْ﴾ [النور: 58]، قال: النساءُ، فإنَّ الرجال يَستأذِنون (1).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning this saying of Allah Almighty, "Let those whom your right hands possess ask your permission" [Surah al-Nur: 58], that he said: "(What is meant is) the women (slave girls), for the men (already) seek permission (from the master of the house)."
