It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning this saying of Allah Almighty, "Let those whom your right hands possess ask your permission" [Surah al-Nur: 58], that he said: "(What is meant is) the women (slave girls), for the men (already) seek permission (from the master of the house)."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Note / Clarification: In manuscript (Z) this word is corrupted into "التيمي".
Grading: Its chain from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) is "da'if"; its defect is the author's teacher "Ibn Abi Darim", who has been criticised. Important point: And what is correct is that this is the own statement of Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami (Abd Allah bin Habib). Reference / Source: Thus it was recorded by Abu Ubayd in "al-Nasikh wa al-Mansukh" (402), Ibn Abi Shaybah (4/ 400), Ibn Abi Hatim (8/ 2633), and al-Nahhas in "al-Nasikh wa al-Mansukh" (p. 592), through various routes from Sufyan al-Thawri, from Abu Hasin (Uthman bin Asim), from Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami as his own statement, and they did not mention Ali. Grading: This (mawquf) chain is sahih. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muhammad bin Bashshar narrated it, in al-Tabarani (18/ 161), from Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi, from Sufyan al-Thawri, from Abu Hasin, from Abu Abd al-Rahman, who said: "It applies to men and women (both)." This narration is "shadh", because, contradicting Muhammad bin Bashshar, Abu Ubayd and Ahmad bin Sinan (in Ibn Abi Hatim) transmitted these words from Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi: "It is specifically for women; men must ask permission in every case, by night and by day." (So Muhammad bin Bashshar's narration is the weaker one.)
