It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning this saying of Allah Almighty, "Allah is the Light of the heavens and the earth" [Surah al-Nur: 35], that he recited this verse and then said: "And those who disbelieve, their deeds are like a mirage in a barren plain which the thirsty one thinks is water, until, when he comes to it, he finds it to be nothing, and he finds Allah there, who pays him his account in full; and Allah is swift in reckoning" [Surah al-Nur: 39]. He said: Likewise, the disbeliever will come on the Day of Resurrection thinking that he has some good with Allah, but he will not find it, and Allah will admit him into the Fire. Then he gave another example for the disbeliever and said: "Or (their example is) like the darknesses in a deep sea, covered by wave upon wave, above which are clouds; darknesses, one above another. When one puts out his hand, he can hardly see it. And the one for whom Allah has not made light has no light" [Surah al-Nur: 40]. He said: So he moves about in five kinds of darkness: his speech is darkness, his deeds are darkness, his entering is darkness, his exiting is darkness, and his destination on the Day of Resurrection is the darknesses of Hell.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah al-Bahili (may Allah be pleased with him) that, addressing (the people) at a funeral at one of the gates of Damascus, he said: O people! Morning and evening you are in a station (this world) in which you are dividing good deeds and bad deeds, and soon you will depart from here to another station, and it is this one (he pointed towards the grave), which is the house of loneliness, the house of darkness, the house of worms and the house of narrowness, except for the one for whom Allah makes it spacious. Then you will move from there to the stations of the Day of Resurrection. You will still be in some of those stations when a matter from Allah's command will overwhelm the people, by which some faces will turn white and some faces will turn black. Then you will move from there to another station, where intense darkness will overwhelm the people. Then light will be distributed: the believer will be given light, while the disbeliever and the hypocrite will be left out and will not be given anything. This is the example which Allah has set forth in His Book: "Or (their example is) like the darknesses in a deep sea, covered by wave upon wave, above which are clouds; darknesses, one above another. When one puts out his hand, he can hardly see it. And the one for whom Allah has not made light has no light" [Surah al-Nur: 40]. The disbeliever and the hypocrite will not be able to get light from the believer's light, just as a blind man cannot get light from the sight of one who sees. The hypocrites will say to those who believe: "Wait for us, so that we may take some of your light. It will be said: Go back behind you and seek light there" [Surah al-Hadid: 13]. This is the scheme by which Allah kept the hypocrite deceived. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has said: "They seek to deceive Allah, but it is He who deceives them (as the outcome of their schemes)" [Surah al-Nisa: 142]. So they will return to the place where the light was distributed, but they will find nothing there. Then they will turn back towards the believers, and a wall will be set up between them: "with a gate, within which is mercy and on whose outer side is punishment. They will call out to them: Were we not with you?" We prayed as you did and took part in the military expeditions with you. "They will say: Yes indeed, but you put yourselves into trial, you waited, you doubted, and false hopes deceived you until the command of Allah came, and the great deceiver (Satan) deceived you concerning Allah" [Surah al-Hadid: 13-14]. He recited up to "and wretched is the destination" [Surah al-Hadid: 15].
