أخبرني محمد بن إسحاق الصَّفّار، حدثنا أحمد بن نَصْر، حدثنا عمرو بن طلحة، أخبرنا إسرائيل، عن عبد الأعلى، عن سعيد بن جُبَير، عن ابن عبَّاس قال: إنَّما كُرِهَ السَّمَرُ حين نَزَلَت هذه الآية: ﴿مُسْتَكْبِرِينَ بِهِ سَامِرًا تَهْجُرُونَ﴾ [المؤمنون: 67]، قال: مُستكبِرِينَ بالبيت يقولون: نحن أهلُه، ﴿تَهْجُرُونَ﴾ قال: كانوا يَهجُرونَه ولا يَعمُرونَه (2).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: Night-time storytelling and conversation (samar) came to be disliked when this verse was revealed: "In arrogance regarding it, conversing by night, speaking evil" [Surah al-Mu'minun: 67]. He said: They were arrogant on account of the House of Allah, saying: We are its custodians. And tahjurun means that they used to abandon it and did not keep it populated (with worship).

أخبرني أبو العبَّاس السَّيّاري، حدثنا محمد بن موسى بن حاتم (3)، حدثنا علي بن الحسن بن شَقِيق، أخبرنا الحسين بن واقد، حدثني يزيد النَّحْوي، أنَّ عِكرمةَ حدَّثه عن ابن عبَّاس قال: جاء أبو سفيان إلى رسول الله ﷺ فقال: يا محمدُ، أَنشُدُك اللهَ والرَّحِمَ، قد أَكَلْنا العِلْهِزَ - يعني الوَبَرَ والدمَ (4) - فأنزل الله ﷿: ﴿وَلَقَدْ أَخَذْنَاهُمْ بِالْعَذَابِ فَمَا اسْتَكَانُوا لِرَبِّهِمْ وَمَا يَتَضَرَّعُونَ﴾ [المؤمنون: 76] (5).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Abu Sufyan came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Muhammad, I implore you by Allah and by the ties of kinship; we have been reduced to eating al-'ilhiz (that is, wool mixed with blood)." Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "And We had seized them with punishment, but they did not humble themselves before their Lord, nor do they humbly supplicate" [Surah al-Mu'minun: 76].
