Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3531

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that a man came to him and said: O Abu Abbas, there is something (troubling) in my heart concerning the Qur'an. He asked: What is it? He said: Doubt. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Woe to you! Have you asked anyone other than me? He said: No. He said: Ask (what you want to ask). He said: I hear Allah saying: "And Allah was ever, over all things, Competent" [Surah al-Ahzab: 27]; (because of the word kana, 'was') was this a matter that has (already) happened (in the past)? And Allah said: "Then there will be no relations between them that Day, nor will they ask about one another" [Surah al-Mu'minun: 101], while in another verse He said: "And they will approach one another, questioning each other" [Surah al-Saffat: 27]. Then he mentioned some other things. Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: As for the statement of Allah: "Allah over all things is Competent," Allah has always been so and will always remain so; He is the First and the Last, the Manifest and the Hidden. As for the statement of Allah Almighty: "Then there will be no relations between them that Day, nor will they ask about one another," this will be at the time of the first blowing (of the Trumpet), when nothing will remain on the earth; then there will be no relations between them, nor will they ask about one another's condition. And as for the statement of Allah: "And they will approach one another, questioning each other" [Surah al-Saffat: 50], when people enter Paradise, they will turn to one another there and (eagerly) ask about each other's condition.
The chain of narration of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.
