It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) consulted Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) about the captives, and he said: "They are your people and your kinsmen, so let them go." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) consulted Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: "Kill them." The narrator said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took ransom from them (and let them go). Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse, from "It is not fitting for a Prophet to have captives until he has inflicted a massacre (upon the enemy) in the land" up to "So eat of what you have taken as spoils, lawful and good" [Surah al-Anfal: 67 - 69]. (Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said:) Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) met Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Because of going against your opinion, some calamity (punishment) almost befell us."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), and the two Shaykhs did not record it.

It is narrated from Khaythamah that Sayyiduna Sa'd bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting among a group of people, and they (some people) mentioned Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and reviled him. Sayyiduna Sa'd said: "Hold your tongues concerning the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), for we committed a sin in the time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (taking ransom for the captives), upon which Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: 'Were it not for a decree from Allah that had preceded, a great punishment would have touched you for what you took' [Surah al-Anfal: 68]. So I hope that a mercy from Allah had already been written for us." One of them said: "By Allah, he used to hate you and call you 'al-Akhnas'." At this Sa'd laughed so much that laughter overcame him. Then he said: "Does it not happen that a man becomes angry with his brother over some matter that occurs between them, yet that does not affect his (the brother's) trustworthiness and integrity?" And he said another word as well.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not record it.
