Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3309

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) consulted Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) about the captives, and he said: "They are your people and your kinsmen, so let them go." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) consulted Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), and he said: "Kill them." The narrator said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took ransom from them (and let them go). Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse, from "It is not fitting for a Prophet to have captives until he has inflicted a massacre (upon the enemy) in the land" up to "So eat of what you have taken as spoils, lawful and good" [Surah al-Anfal: 67 - 69]. (Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said:) Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) met Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "Because of going against your opinion, some calamity (punishment) almost befell us."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), and the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Grading: This narration is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (sahih due to supporting reports), except for the words: "Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) met Umar …" to the end.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This isnad is hasan in corroborating chains and supporting reports because of Ibrahim bin Muhajir (al-Bajali); there is some weakness (lin) in him, and he is alone in the part referred to. However, the core of the hadith is authentically established from the narration of Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) himself in Sahih Muslim (1763), through Ibn Abbas from him.
Reference / Source: As for the hadith of Ibrahim bin Muhajir, Abu Nu'aym recorded it in "al-Hilyah" (1/ 43) by way of Ahmad bin Abi Surayj al-Razi, from Ubaydullah bin Musa, with this same isnad.
