It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he was asked: "Did Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) see his Lord?" He said: "Yes, he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw (Him); it was as if his (peace and blessings be upon him) blessed feet were upon a green carpet, and before him was a curtain of pearls." The narrator said: I said: "O Abu Abbas! Does Allah Almighty not say: 'Vision cannot grasp Him, but He grasps all vision' [Surah al-An'am: 103]?" He said: "May good come to you! That is His own light: when Allah manifests Himself with His light, nothing can grasp Him."
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.
