Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3273

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he was asked: "Did Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) see his Lord?" He said: "Yes, he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw (Him); it was as if his (peace and blessings be upon him) blessed feet were upon a green carpet, and before him was a curtain of pearls." The narrator said: I said: "O Abu Abbas! Does Allah Almighty not say: 'Vision cannot grasp Him, but He grasps all vision' [Surah al-An'am: 103]?" He said: "May good come to you! That is His own light: when Allah manifests Himself with His light, nothing can grasp Him."
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is very weak; Ibrahim bin al-Hakam is agreed to be weak, and al-Dhahabi said in his "Talkhis": He is matruk (abandoned).
Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi recorded something similar (3279) by way of Salm bin Ja'far, from al-Hakam bin Aban, with this chain - but without mention of the two feet and the veil.
Grading: This chain is hasan.
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i recorded (11473) by way of Yazid bin Abi Hakim, from al-Hakam bin Aban, from Ikrimah, from Ibn Abbas, who said: Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) saw his Lord, Mighty and Majestic.
Details of the narration: This has already appeared by another route from Ikrimah at no. (218); see the discussion of the question of the vision in the commentary on hadith no. (217).
