Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at al-Arj pouring water over his blessed head because of the heat while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was fasting.
This hadith has a basis in the Muwatta' of Imam Malik; if Muhammad bin Nu'aym al-Sa'di preserved it in this way, then it is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs.

It is narrated from some of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (may Allah be pleased with them) that one of them said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), during his (peace and blessings be upon him) journey in the year of the Conquest of Makkah, ordering the people to break their fast, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Gain strength for (facing) your enemy," while the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was himself fasting at that time. Abu Bakr bin Abd al-Rahman says that the person who narrated this hadith to him said: I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) at al-Arj pouring water over his blessed head while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was fasting, because of thirst or heat.
