Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 1596

It is narrated from Ka'b bin Asim al-Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Fasting while travelling is not an act of righteousness."
This hadith has an authentic chain (sahih al-isnad), but the two Shaykhs did not record it. Although the two Shaykhs agreed upon the hadith of Hamzah bin Amr al-Aslami, which is narrated from Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (Z) and (S) it is written "Abi al-Darda'", which is wrong; the correction was made from manuscript ('A), namely that she is "Umm al-Darda'".

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Criticism of a narrator: Abu Bakr bin Ishaq's name is Ahmad; al-Humaydi is 'Abd Allah bin al-Zubayr; Sufyan is Ibn 'Uyaynah; al-Zuhri is Muhammad bin Muslim; and Umm al-Darda' refers to "the Younger" (Hujaymah bint Huyayy).
Reference / Source: Ahmad (39/ 23681), Ibn Majah (1664) and al-Nasa'i (2575) narrated it with this same chain of Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it through two routes from al-Zuhri.
Variation in the chain: Al-Nasa'i (2576) narrated it through the chain of al-Awza'i from al-Zuhri as "mursal" from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib, and said that it is a "mistake", because no one corroborated Muhammad bin Kathir in this chain; the correct one is the one that preceded.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic the hadith of Jabir bin 'Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him) is in Ahmad and Muslim (1115).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The hadith of 'Abd Allah bin 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) is found in Ibn Majah (1665) and Ibn Hibban (3548).
