Book of Leading the Prayer and Congregational Prayer
إِذَا صَلَّى أَحَدُكُمْ فَلْيَبْدَأْ بِتَحْمِيدِ رَبِّهِ وَالثَّنَاءِ عَلَيْهِ وَلْيُصَلِّ عَلَى النَّبِيِّ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ -
When one of you prays, let him begin by praising his Lord and extolling Him, then send blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)

أخبرنا أبو الفضل الحسن (3) بن يعقوب العَدْل، حدثنا السَّريُّ بن خُزَيمة، حدثنا عبد الله بن يزيد المقرئ، حدثنا حَيْوة، عن أبي هانئ، عن أبي علي الجَنْبي، عن فَضَالة بن عُبيد الأنصاري: أنَّ رسول الله ﷺ رأى رجلًا صلَّى لم يَحمَدِ اللهَ ولم يُمجِّدْه، ولم يُصَلِّ على النبيِّ ﷺ، وانصَرَفَ، فقال رسول الله ﷺ: "عَجِلَ هذا" فَدَعَاه، فقال له ولغيره: "إذا صلَّى أحدُكم فليَبدَأْ بتمجيد ربِّه والثناءِ عليه، وليُصلِّ على النبي ﷺ ثم يَدعُو بما شاءَ" (1).
هذا حديث صحيح على شرط مسلم، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Fadalah bin Ubayd al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) saw a man who prayed but neither praised and glorified Allah nor sent blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and then left. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "This man has been hasty." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) called him and said to him and to others: "When one of you prays, let him begin with the praise and glorification of his Lord, then let him send blessings upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and after that let him supplicate for whatever he wishes."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

حدثنا أبو العباس محمد بن يعقوب، حدثنا أحمد بن عيسى التِّنِّيسي، حدثنا عمرو بن أبي سَلَمة، حدثنا زهير بن محمد المكِّي، عن هشام بن عُرْوة، عن أبيه، عن عائشة: أنَّ النبي ﷺ كان يُسلِّم في الصلاة تسليمةً واحدةً تِلقاءَ وجهِه يميلُ إلى الشِّقِّ الأيمن قليلًا شيئًا (2).
هذا حديث صحيح على شرط الشيخين، ولم يُخرجاه. وقد رواه وُهَيب بن خالد، عن عبيد الله بن عمر، عن القاسم، عن عائشة: أنها كانت تُسلِّم تسليمةً واحدةً (1). وقد اتَّفق الشيخان على الاحتجاج بعمرو بن أبي سَلَمة وزهير بن محمد (2).

Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to give only a single salam in the prayer, facing straight ahead, turning slightly towards the right side.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it. Wuhayb bin Khalid narrated it from Ubaydullah bin Umar, from al-Qasim, from Aishah: that she used to give a single salam. And the two Shaykhs agreed on using Amr bin Abi Salamah and Zuhayr bin Muhammad as evidence.
