Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to give only a single salam in the prayer, facing straight ahead, turning slightly towards the right side.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it. Wuhayb bin Khalid narrated it from Ubaydullah bin Umar, from al-Qasim, from Aishah: that she used to give a single salam. And the two Shaykhs agreed on using Amr bin Abi Salamah and Zuhayr bin Muhammad as evidence.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (2) There is weakness (lin) in this chain: the narration of the Syrians from Zuhayr bin Muhammad is not sound, and 'Amr bin Abi Salamah is Syrian. Ahmad bin 'Isa is da'if, but he is corroborated. Reference / Source: It was narrated by al-Tirmidhi (296) and Ibn Hibban (1995) by two routes from 'Amr bin Abi Salamah with this same chain. Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ibn Majah (919) by way of Abd al-Malik bin Muhammad al-San'ani (of Damascus), but Abd al-Malik's hadith is lin (weak). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Baqi bin Makhlad narrated it through Hisham bin 'Urwah, but concerning the narrator named "'Asim" in it, Ibn Hajar said that he is 'Asim bin 'Umar (da'if), not 'Asim al-Ahwal. Grading: Bahz bin Hakim narrated it from 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and made clear that the "single salam" was in the night prayer (tahajjud) of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (Musnad Ahmad 43/ (25987)). Important point: Its chain is hasan, and it is more correct than the narration of Zuhayr bin Muhammad. General principle: Imam al-Tirmidhi says that some of the people of knowledge hold the "single salam", but the most authentic narrations from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) are of "two salams", and the majority of the Companions and the Successors act upon it. Imam al-Shafi'i said: He may give one salam or two (both are permissible).
Grading: (1) Ibn Khuzaymah (730) and Ibn al-Mundhir narrated it with a sahih chain as "mawquf" on 'A'ishah (i.e. her own practice). Abd al-Wahhab al-Thaqafi and Yahya bin Sa'id also corroborated it.
Technical note: (2) However, the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim) did not record 'Amr's narration from Zuhayr, because the Syrians' narration from Zuhayr is subject to criticism.
