نَهَى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ - صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَآلِهِ وَسَلَّمَ - عَنْ نَقْرَةِ الْغُرَابِ وَافْتِرَاشِ السَّبُعِ وَأَنْ يُوطِّنَ الرَّجُلُ الْمَكَانَ كَمَا يُوطِّنُهُ الْبَعِيرُ
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade pecking like a crow, spreading the arms like a beast of prey, and a man fixing a place for himself as a camel does

حدثنا أبو العباس محمد بن يعقوب، حدثنا الرَّبيع بن سليمان، حدثنا شعيب بن الليث بن سعد، حدثنا أَبي، عن محمد بن عَجْلان، عن سُمَيٍّ مولى أبي بكر، عن أبي صالح عن أبي هريرة أنه قال: شَكَا أصحابُ رسول الله ﷺ مَشَقَّةَ السجود عليهم إذا انفَرَجُوا، فقال: "استَعِينوا بالرُّكَب". قال ابن عَجْلانَ: وذلك أن يَضَعَ مِرفَقَيهِ على رُكْبتيه إذا أطال السجودَ ودَعَا (1).
هذا حديث صحيح على شرط مسلم، ولم يُخرجاه.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) complained to him (peace and blessings be upon him) of the strain they felt in prostration (from keeping their arms spread apart), so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Seek help from your knees." Ibn Ajlan said: This means that when the prostration becomes long and one is supplicating, he should rest his elbows on his knees.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

(1) خولف ابن عجلان في هذا الحديث فرواه غيره مرسلًا، وهو الراجح كما سيأتي. أبو صالح: هو ذكوان السَّمّان.
Grading: (1) Ibn 'Ajlan was contradicted in this hadith; the correct view is that it is "mursal".
Technical note: Abu Salih refers to Dhakwan al-Samman.
وأخرجه أحمد 14/ (8477)، وأبو داود (902)، والترمذي (286)، وابن حبان (1918) من غير طريقين عن الليث بن سعد بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ahmad 14/ (8477), Abu Dawud (902), al-Tirmidhi (286) and Ibn Hibban (1918) by way of al-Layth bin Sa'd with this same chain.
وأخرجه أحمد أيضًا 15/ (9403) من طريق يعقوب بن عبد الرحمن، عن ابن عجلان، به.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ahmad 15/ (9403) through Ya'qub bin Abd al-Rahman from Ibn 'Ajlan.
وقد خالف ابنَ عجلان فيه سفيانُ الثوري وسفيان بن عيينة وغيرهما، فرووه عن سُميٍّ عن النعمان بن أبي عياش - وهو تابعي - عن النبي ﷺ مرسلًا، وهذا الذي صوَّبه البخاري في "التاريخ الكبير" 4/ 203، وأبو حاتم الرازي كما في "العلل" لابنه (546)، والدارقطني في "العلل" (1883)، والترمذي في "سننه" (286)، ورجاله على إرساله ثقات.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Sufyan al-Thawri, Ibn 'Uyaynah and others contradicted Ibn 'Ajlan and narrated it through Sumayy from al-Nu'man bin Abi 'Ayyash (a Successor) as "mursal". Imam al-Bukhari, Abu Hatim, al-Daraqutni and al-Tirmidhi declared this (mursal version) correct. Its narrators are thiqah.
