Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8874

It is narrated from Amr bin Qays al-Sakuni that he said: I went with my father in a delegation to Sayyiduna Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him), and I heard a man narrating this hadith to the people: "Among the signs of the Hour is that the wicked will be raised up and the good will be brought low, action and deeds will be stored away (or deeds will disappear) and talk will prevail (rhetoric will increase), and the 'Mathnah' will be read among the people, and there will be no one among them who changes it or objects to it (and forbids it)." It was asked: What is the 'Mathnah'? He said: "Whatever (writings) are written other than the Book of Allah." Amr bin Qays said: I narrated this hadith to some people among whom was Isma'il bin Ubaydullah, and he said: I too was with you in that gathering. Do you know who that (narrating) man was? I said: No. He said: He was (the Companion of the Messenger) Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) through both chains, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: This report is sahih as mawquf, as has been explained, but this chain has weakness on account of Muhammad bin Kathir al-San'ani. Despite his weakness he is acceptable for corroboration, but he made many mistakes.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): One of his mistakes in this report is the mention of "Mu'awiyah", whereas what is preserved (mahfuz) is that it is his son, Yazid bin Mu'awiyah. It was narrated correctly in this way by Bishr bin Bakr al-Tinnisi (who is thiqah) from al-Awza'i, as recorded by Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" [46/ 313] (al-Awza'i's name has dropped out of the printed edition). Ibn 'Asakir [46/ 313] also narrated the hadith of Muhammad bin Kathir via Ahmad bin 'Abd al-Wahid, from him, with this chain.
