It is narrated from Amr bin Qays al-Kindi that he said: I was with my father at Huwwarin, and I was still a young boy. I saw that people had gathered around a man, so I asked: Who is this? The people said: This is Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both). I heard him narrating this hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), that he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Among the signs of the Hour is that the wicked will be raised up and the good will be brought low, much talk will be made and deeds will be stored away (or deeds will disappear), and the 'Mathnah' will be read among the people, and there will not be a single person among them who objects to it (and forbids it)." It was asked: What is the 'Mathnah'? He said: "Whatever (laws or books) are written other than the Book of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic (and people begin to give them preference over the Qur'an)."

Explanation & Benefits

Note / Clarification: In the printed edition this name has been corrupted into "ma'a Abi al-Fawaris"! Huwwarin (with damma, a doubled waw, and the ra' with fatha or kasra) is a village of Hims, 80 km to its south-east, and it was there that Yazid bin Mu'awiyah died in 64 AH.
(589). Grading: This narration is sahih as mawquf on 'Abdullah bin 'Amr. Yahya bin Hamzah is alone in narrating it as marfu', whereas most of the students of 'Amr bin Qays opposed him and narrated it as mawquf, as will follow. So this narration of Yahya is shadh, although the chain up to Yahya is strong. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Hisham is corroborated in narrating from Yahya by al-Hakam bin Musa in al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (14559), and by Ahmad bin Sulayman (Ibn Abi al-Tayyib al-Marwazi) in al-Harawi's "Dhamm al-Kalam wa-Ahlihi" (589). (6375). Reference / Source: It was narrated as mawquf from 'Amr bin Qays (by several narrators): al-Awza'i (as will follow later with the author); Muhammad bin Himyar [in Nu'aym bin Hammad's "al-Fitan" (691), and via him in Abu 'Amr al-Dani's "al-Sunan al-Waridah fi al-Fitan" (403) and in Ibn 'Asakir's "Tarikh Dimashq" (49/ 367)]; Isma'il bin 'Ayyash [in Abu 'Ubayd's "Fada'il al-Qur'an" (p. 71), "Gharib al-Hadith" (4/ 281), al-Dani (400) and al-Bayhaqi's "Shu'ab al-Iman" (4834)]; Mu'awiyah bin Salih [in Ibn Abi Shaybah (15/ 165)]; al-Harith bin Yazid al-Himsi [in al-Darimi (493), and via him in Ibn 'Asakir (49/ 367 - 368)]; and Thawr bin Yazid al-Kala'i [in al-Tabarani's "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (482) and Ibn 'Asakir (14/ 424)]. Some of them add to the wording of others. The first part of Muhammad bin Himyar's narration has already appeared with the author under number (6375). Details of the narration: Some of them added: 'Abdullah bin 'Amr was asked about what comes of the hadiths of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: "Whatever reaches you from someone whom you trust with regard to himself and his religion, take it. And hold fast to the Qur'an, for it is about it that you will be questioned and by it that you will be recompensed, and it suffices as an admonisher for one who understands."
