Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8789

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I asked my Lord for three things; He granted me two and withheld one from me. I asked my Lord not to destroy my Ummah through famine, and He granted me that. I asked Him not to set over them an enemy from other than themselves (an alien people) (who would wipe them out), and He granted me that too. And I asked Him not to divide them into factions nor make them taste the fighting of one another, and He withheld that from me."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is sahih li-ghayrihi, and this chain is hasan because of Kathir bin Zayd al-Aslami and al-Walid bin Rabah.
Reference: Ibn Mardawayh recorded it in his "Tafsir" (as in "Tafsir Ibn Kathir" 3/270) through Abu Kurayb Muhammad bin al-'Ala', from Zayd bin al-Hubab, with this chain.
Reference: Al-Bazzar (8686) recorded it through Abu 'Awanah, from 'Umar bin Abi Salamah, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Grading of the chain: Its chain is usable for consideration (yu'tabar bihi) and can possibly be graded hasan.
Reference: Ibn Abi Hatim recorded it in his "Tafsir" (4/1312) and al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (1862) through Asbat bin Nasr, from Isma'il al-Suddi, from Abu al-Minhal, from Abu Hurayrah, attributing it to the Prophet, who said: "I asked my Lord for four things for my community; He gave me three and withheld one …"; so he added a fourth, namely his saying: "I asked Him that my community would not all disbelieve at once, and He granted it to me."
Grading: Its chain is weak because this Abu al-Minhal is unknown (majhul). Al-Bukhari mentioned him in his "Tarikh" (9/72) and Ibn Abi Hatim in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" (9/445), but they mentioned neither his name nor anyone narrating from him other than al-Suddi. His above-mentioned addition is a munkar addition in which he is alone.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there are reports from several Companions about asking for the three things, among them the hadiths of Anas bin Malik and Thawban (may Allah be pleased with them both), which passed with the author (al-Hakim) at numbers (1197) and (8595).
