It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Dajjal was mentioned in his presence, and he said: O people! When the Dajjal comes out, you will be divided into three groups: one group will follow him; one group will go off to the lands of their forefathers, to the places where the wormwood shrubs grow; and one group will take up position on the bank of the Euphrates - the Dajjal will fight them and they will fight him - until the believers gather in the villages of Syria. Then they will send out a vanguard (towards the Dajjal's army), among whom will be a horseman on a reddish-sorrel (ashqar) or piebald horse. Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: They will all be martyred, and not a single one of them will return. Salamah says that Abu Sadiq told him, on the authority of Rabi'ah bin Najidh, that Ibn Mas'ud said the words "a reddish-sorrel horse." Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The People of the Book claim that Sayyiduna al-Masih (peace be upon him) will descend (to confront) him. (The narrator says:) I did not hear Ibn Mas'ud narrate any other report from the People of the Book besides this one. Then Gog and Magog will come out, and they will surge through the earth like waves in great numbers and spread corruption. Then Abdullah recited this verse: "And they will swoop down from every height" [Surah al-Anbiya: 96]. He said: Then Allah Almighty will send upon them a creature (a worm) like this naghaf (the worm that infests the noses of camels); it will enter their ears and nostrils, and they will all die from it, and the earth will be filled with the stench of their corpses. Then there will be crying out in supplication to Allah, and Allah Almighty will send down rain that will cleanse the earth of them (their corpses). He said: Then Allah Almighty will send an extremely cold wind (zamharir baridah), which will not leave a single believer on the face of the earth, but that wind will take him into its embrace (take his soul). Then the Hour will be established upon the worst of people. Then an angel will stand between the heaven and the earth with the Trumpet and blow into it - and the Trumpet is a horn - and all the creation of the heavens and the earth will die, except those whom your Lord wills. Then there will be an interval between the two blowings for as long as Allah wills, and there will be no creature of the children of Adam but that some part of it remains. Then Allah Almighty will send down from beneath the Throne water like the semen of men, from which their flesh and bodies will grow just as the earth brings forth vegetation from rain. Then Abdullah recited this verse: "And it is Allah who sends the winds, and they stir up clouds, and We drive them to a dead land and give life thereby to the earth after its death. Thus is the Resurrection" [Surah Fatir: 9]. He said: Then an angel will blow into the Trumpet between the heaven and the earth, and every soul will fly to its body until it enters it. Then they will all rise up before Allah, the Lord of the worlds, like one man standing up. Then Allah Almighty will manifest Himself to the creation and meet them, and whoever used to worship anything besides Allah, that thing will be brought before him and he will follow it. Allah Almighty will meet the Jews and ask: Whom did you worship? They will say: We worshipped Uzayr. Allah will ask: Do you want water? They will say: Yes. Then Hell will be shown to them like a mirage. Then Abdullah recited this verse: "And We will present Hell that Day to the disbelievers, on full display" [Surah al-Kahf: 100]. Then Allah will meet the Christians and ask: Whom did you worship? They will say: The Messiah. Allah will ask: Do you need water? They will say: Yes. So Hell will be shown to them too like a mirage. The same will be done with everyone who used to worship anyone besides Allah. Then Abdullah recited this verse: "And stop them; indeed, they are to be questioned" [Surah al-Saffat: 24]. Then Allah Almighty will manifest Himself to the creation in His special majesty, until He passes by the Muslims and asks: Whom did you worship? They will say: We worshipped Allah and did not associate anything with Him. Allah Almighty will rebuke them (test them) two or three times and ask: Whom did you worship? They will say: We worshipped Allah and did not associate anything with Him. Allah will say: Do you recognise your Lord? They will say: Glory be to Him! When He makes Himself known, we will recognise Him. At that time "the shin will be uncovered," and every believer will fall down in prostration before Allah, while the backs of the hypocrites will become (rigid) like a single plank, as though iron skewers (al-safafid) had been put in them. They will say: O our Lord! Allah will say: "You used to be called to prostration when you were sound (but you did not prostrate)." Then the Sirat (the Bridge) will be ordered and set up over Hell, and people will pass over it according to their deeds: some groups like the flash of lightning, some like the speed of the wind, some like the flight of birds, some like the swiftest beasts, until a man will pass over it running, then another walking, and the last of them will be a man who drags himself along on his belly. He will say: O my Lord! Why did You make me slow? Allah will say: "I did not make you slow; rather, your deeds made you slow." Then Allah Almighty will grant permission for intercession, and the first to intercede will be the Holy Spirit, Jibril (peace be upon him), then Ibrahim, the Friend of Allah (peace be upon him), then Musa (peace be upon him), then Isa (peace be upon him). Then your Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) will stand up fourth, and after him (peace and blessings be upon him) no one will intercede in the matter in which he (peace and blessings be upon him) intercedes. This is the "Praiseworthy Station" (al-Maqam al-Mahmud) which Allah Almighty mentioned: "It may be that your Lord will raise you to a praiseworthy station" [Surah al-Isra: 79]. Then every soul will see its abode, whether it is in Paradise or in Hell, and this is "the Day of Regret." The people of Hell will see their (would-be) house in Paradise, and it will be said to them: "If only you had done (good) deeds!" and they will be overwhelmed with regret. And the people of Paradise will see their (would-be) house in Hell, and it will be said to them: "Had Allah not bestowed His favour upon you (you would have been here)." Then the angels, the prophets, the martyrs, the righteous and the believers will intercede, and Allah will accept their intercession. Then Allah Almighty will say: "I am the Most Merciful of those who show mercy," and by His mercy He will bring out of Hell more people than those who came out through the intercession of all creation. Then Allah will say: "I am the Most Merciful of all." Then Abdullah recited these verses: "What led you into Saqar? They will say: We were not of those who prayed, nor did we feed the poor, and we used to indulge (in falsehood) with those who indulged, and we used to deny the Day of Recompense" [Surah al-Muddaththir: 42-46]. Then Abdullah counted four on his hand (tying knots with his fingers) and said: "Do you see any good in these people?" No one in whom there is even a speck of good will be left in Hell. Then, when Allah Almighty wills that no one more be brought out of Hell, He will change their faces and colours. So a man will come (to intercede) and look, but he will not be able to recognise anyone. Then a man in Hell will call out to him, saying: O so-and-so! I am so-and-so. He will say: I do not recognise you. At that time they will say: "Our Lord, bring us out of it; then if we return (to evil), we will indeed be wrongdoers," and Allah will say: "Remain despised therein and do not speak to Me" [Surah al-Mu'minun: 107-108]. When Allah says this, Hell will be closed over them, and then not a single one of them will be able to come out.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The text is like this in the manuscripts at this place, but later, at hadith no. (8986), the narration of Asid bin 'Asim from Sufyan will come, in which the words there are "bi-gharbi al-Sham" (in the western part of al-Sham); this is also what is in most of the printed takhrij sources and in al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis al-Mustadrak". Perhaps this (gharbi al-Sham, with ghayn and ba') is correct. And Allah knows best.
Technical note: The one who said this is "Abu al-Za'ra'". And the word "ma" has dropped out of the manuscripts.
Note / Clarification: (Naghaf means) the worms that are found in the noses of camels and sheep.
Note / Clarification: The text from the word "fa-taj'ar" up to here has dropped out of manuscripts (Z) and (B).
Note / Clarification: It is like this in the manuscripts, whereas in the takhrij sources the words are: "illa fi al-ard minhu shay'", and this is clearer.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts "yursil" is written, which is a mistake; also the words "fa-suqnahu ila baladin mayyit" have dropped out of them. We have recorded the verse as it is recited.
Technical note: In al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis al-Mustadrak" the words are "fa-yuhyawna hayata rajulin wahid", meaning: they will stand up alive like the life of a single man.
General principle: However, Imam al-Qurtubi, in his book "al-Tadhkirah" (p. 482), took it to be from "tahiyyah" (greeting/reverence). He says that tahiyyah takes two forms: one is that a person places his hands on his knees while standing (as in ruku'), and this is the meaning intended in this hadith - do you not see that it says: "qiyaman li-Rabb al-'alamin" (standing before the Lord of the worlds)? The other form is that he falls down on his face, kneeling, and this is the form well known among people; some have interpreted "fa-yakhirruna sujudan" (and they will fall down in prostration) in this way, and this is what people know as tahiyyah.

Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (Z) and (B) it is "law 'alimtum", while the text we have established is taken from manuscripts (K) and (M).
Grading: Its chain is "layyin" (soft/weak), because Abu al-Za'ra' is alone in this narration.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu al-Za'ra' is 'Abd Allah bin Hani' al-Kufi, and his nephew (sister's son) Salamah bin Kuhayl is alone in narrating from him. Although Ibn Sa'd, al-'Ijli and Ibn Hibban declared him trustworthy, these scholars are known to be "lenient" in declaring narrators trustworthy, and no declaration of his trustworthiness is reported from anyone else. Rather, Imam al-Bukhari, in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (5/221), pointed to this very hadith of his, mentioned from it the story of the intercession of our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) as the fourth, and then said: "What is well known from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is: 'I am the first to intercede', and he is not corroborated in his hadith."
