Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8707

It is narrated from Shahr bin Hawshab that he said: When the matter of the pledge of allegiance to Yazid bin Mu'awiyah came, I thought that I should go to al-Sham and keep away from the evil of this pledge. So I set out and reached al-Sham, and there I was told of the gathering of Nawf (al-Bikali), so I came to him. There was a man present whose eyes were diseased, wearing a black striped cloak; he was Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both). When Nawf saw him, he stopped speaking. Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: Continue with what you were saying. Nawf said: You are more entitled to speak, for you are a Companion of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: These people, meaning the rulers, have forbidden us from narrating hadith. Nawf said: I adjure you by Allah to narrate to us a hadith that you heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: I heard him (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Soon there will be migration after migration; people will gather towards the place to which Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) migrated (the land of al-Sham). None will remain on the earth except its worst people; their land will cast them out and their own souls will loathe them. Allah Almighty will drive them together towards the Fire along with the monkeys and swine; that Fire will stay with them wherever they spend the night and wherever they take their midday rest, and it will devour whoever lags behind." (Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both)) said: And I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Some people of my Ummah will come out from the direction of the east who will recite the Qur'an, but it will not go beyond their throats. Whenever one generation of them comes to an end, another will arise, until the Dajjal appears among the last of them."

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The manuscripts have "وتقذفهم", while the text established here is taken from al-Dhahabi's "al-Talkhis", which seems more correct. The most correct form of the whole phrase would be, as in "Jami' Ma'mar" and elsewhere: "Their land will cast them out, and the Self of Allah will find them loathsome; the Fire will gather them together with the apes", etc.

Grading: Its chain is, if Allah wills, "hasan" on account of "Shahr bin Hawshab", who is hasan al-hadith in corroborations and supporting reports. He is corroborated in what will come with the author under number (8623), with a chain that is also considered in corroborations, and there are also strong supporting reports for it.
Reference / Source: This hadith is in "Jami' Ma'mar" in the narration of 'Abd al-Razzaq under number (20790). By way of 'Abd al-Razzaq it was narrated by Nu'aym bin Hammad in "al-Fitan" (1765), Ahmad in "al-Musnad" (11/6871), al-Baghawi in "Sharh al-Sunnah" (4008) and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (1/161). Nu'aym confined himself to the first part only and did not mention the story with Nawf (al-Bikali).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It was narrated by Abu Dawud al-Tayalisi (2407) (and by way of him Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (6/53-54) and Ibn 'Asakir (1/160-161)), and (also) by Imam Ahmad (6952) and Abu Dawud al-Sijistani (2482) (and by way of him al-Bayhaqi in "al-Asma' wa al-Sifat" (970)). All three of them (al-Tayalisi, Ahmad and Abu Dawud) narrate it by way of Hisham al-Dastuwa'i, from Qatadah, with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: However, Abu Dawud al-Sijistani confined himself to mentioning only its first part, in abridged form.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated something similar in "al-Awsat" (6791) and "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (2761) by way of al-Walid bin al-Walid, from Sa'id bin Bashir, from Qatadah, from Shahr, from Nawf al-Bikali, from 'Abdullah bin 'Amr (may Allah be pleased with him).
Grading: Al-Walid and Sa'id are both weak, and al-Walid is the more severely weak of the two.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): And (the fact is that) Shahr (bin Hawshab) narrated it from 'Abdullah bin 'Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) without any intermediary.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It was also narrated through Shahr (bin Hawshab) from 'Abdullah bin 'Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) by Layth bin Abi Sulaym, found in Nu'aym bin Hammad (1767), al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (14542) and Abu Nu'aym's "al-Hilyah" (6/66); by Matar al-Warraq, in Nu'aym (1748); and by Mayyah Abu al-'Ala', also in Nu'aym (1758).
Details of the narration: All of them except al-Tabarani confined themselves to the first part only, while al-Tabarani related both parts. However, Matar al-Warraq did not narrate it as marfu', but kept it mawquf on 'Abdullah bin 'Amr (may Allah be pleased with him).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Mayyah Abu al-'Ala' made clear that Shahr bin Hawshab heard it from 'Abdullah bin 'Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) in the gathering of Nawf (al-Bikali) in Jerusalem (Bayt al-Maqdis). And this narrator "Mayyah" is majhul.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Yahya bin Abi Hayyah went against this in Imam Ahmad (9/5562/2-3) (and by way of him Ibn 'Asakir (1/161)): he narrated it from Shahr bin Hawshab from 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) (instead of 'Amr), making it part of the Musnad of Ibn 'Umar. This Yahya is actually "Abu Janab al-Kalbi", and he is weak; it appears that he made a mistake in naming the Companion. That said, a narration has also come from 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) through a route other than Shahr bin Hawshab, as will come.
Reference / Source: This hadith will come in similar form, with both its parts, with the author under number (8770), by way of 'Abdullah bin Salih, from Musa bin 'Ulayy bin Rabah, from his father, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), from 'Abdullah bin 'Amr bin al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him).
Grading: There is no problem with its narrators except "'Abdullah bin Salih" (who is al-Misri, the scribe of al-Layth); there is some weakness (lin) in him, but his hadith is taken into consideration in corroborations and supporting reports, whereby it becomes "hasan", as is the case here.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It has a shahid (supporting report) from the hadith of 'Abdullah bin 'Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), which al-Mustaghfiri narrated in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (413) and Ibn 'Asakir (1/163) through two routes via Hisham bin 'Ammar, from Yahya bin Hamzah, from al-Awza'i, from Nafi' (the mawla of Ibn 'Umar), from Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Grading: Hisham bin 'Ammar is saduq and hasan al-hadith, and all the narrators above him are thiqah.
Details of the narration: Its first part was narrated by Ya'qub bin Sufyan in "al-Ma'rifah wa al-Tarikh" (2/304) (and by way of him al-Bayhaqi in "al-Asma' wa al-Sifat" (971) and Ibn 'Asakir (1/162)) from Abu al-Nadr Ishaq bin Ibrahim bin Yazid and Hisham bin 'Ammar, from Yahya bin Hamzah, with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): But "Abu al-Nadr" said in his narration: "from al-Awza'i, from someone who narrated it to him from Nafi'", thus inserting an unnamed intermediary between al-Awza'i and Nafi' and spoiling the chain. There is no problem with Abu al-Nadr, and he is of better standing than Hisham bin 'Ammar. Its second part was narrated in abridged form by Ibn Majah (174) from Hisham bin 'Ammar, with his chain up to Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).
Important point: Ibn Kathir said in his "Tafsir" (6/284): "It is 'gharib' as a hadith of Nafi', and it appears that al-Awza'i narrated it from one of his weak shaykhs, and Allah knows best. The narration from 'Abdullah bin 'Amr bin al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him) is closer to being 'preserved'." End of quote.
Note / Clarification: The story of the Fire gathering the people has already passed with the author under number (8620) from 'Abdullah bin 'Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) through another route, as "mawquf". See its supporting reports there.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The second part (i.e. about people emerging from the East, the last group of them emerging with the Dajjal) is supported by the hadith of Abu Barzah al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him), found in Ahmad (33/19783 and 19808) and al-Nasa'i (3552), which has already passed with the author under number (2679).
Grading: Its chain can possibly be considered hasan, and its basis is in the "Two Sahihs" (al-Bukhari and Muslim) from a hadith other than that of Abu Barzah, as was explained there.
