Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8706

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "On the day of the Great Battle (al-Malhamah al-Kubra), the encampment (headquarters) of the Muslims will be in a land called al-Ghutah, in which there is a city called Damascus; it will be the best abode of the Muslims on that day."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The (underlying) hadith is sahih, but this present chain is weak on account of Muhammad bin Wahb al-Dimashqi.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): He is Muhammad bin Wahb bin Muslim al-Qurashi al-Dimashqi, from whom Sadaqah bin Khalid narrates, as in Ibn 'Asakir's "Tarikh Dimashq" (56/207). The naming of his shaykh as "Sadaqah bin 'Abdullah" in the manuscripts of al-Mustadrak is strange, and most likely it is an error, because this hadith is known only through the narration of Sadaqah bin Khalid (from Khalid bin Dihqan), as will come. Sadaqah bin Khalid is thiqah, whereas Sadaqah bin 'Abdullah is weak; both are Damascenes and close in generation. In any case, this hadith is also narrated through a route other than this one from "Zayd bin Artah", so the hadith is sahih.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (1313) (and by way of him Ibn 'Asakir (1/231)) by way of Abu Mushir 'Abd al-A'la bin Mushir and Hisham bin 'Ammar, the two Damascenes; and al-Raba'i in "Fada'il al-Sham wa Dimashq" (51) by way of Hisham bin 'Ammar. Both of them ('Abd al-A'la and Hisham) said: Sadaqah bin Khalid narrated to us, from Khalid bin Dihqan, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Abu Mushir narrated it once more from Sadaqah bin Khalid, in Ibn 'Asakir (1/231), from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Yazid bin Jabir, from Zayd bin Artah.
Reference / Source: Likewise Ahmad (36/21725) and Abu Dawud (4298) narrated it by way of Yahya bin Hamzah, from 'Abd al-Rahman bin Yazid bin Jabir, from Zayd bin Artah.
Grading: This chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): With Imam Ahmad it does not contain the words: "the best dwelling-place of the Muslims on that day", while the wording of Abu Dawud is: "one of the best cities of al-Sham".
Reference / Source: 'Abd al-Rahman bin Jubayr bin Nufayr narrated it from his father, from 'Awf bin Malik al-Ashja'i, at the end of a long hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), which Ahmad (39/23985) recorded.
Note / Clarification: "الفُسطاط": the place where people gather.
Note / Clarification: "الغوطة" is the name of the orchards and waters surrounding Damascus.
