Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8705

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "A time will come upon the people in which a man will be envied for the lightness of his circumstances (having few dependants and little wealth) just as today one with abundant wealth and children is envied." A man asked him: Which wealth will be best in that time? He said: "Good weapons and a fine horse; wherever the tribulation turns, he will move away from it (by means of them)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts this name has been corrupted into "al-Hasan bin al-Walid", although there is no narrator of that name at this level among those who narrate from Sufyan al-Thawri. The correction is from "Ithaf al-Maharah" (13321), and this chain has also occurred with the author in its correct form in more than ten places.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): This (name/wording) had dropped out of the manuscripts; we have restored it from "al-Ithaf" and the sources of takhrij, where they narrated it by way of Sufyan. However, "al-Ithaf" adds "al-A'mash" between Sufyan and Salamah, and (in fact) Sufyan narrated from both of them.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): This addition is taken from al-Dhahabi's "al-Talkhis".

Grading: This report is "jayyid" (good), and this chain can, if Allah wills, be considered "hasan" in corroborations and supporting reports.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason is "Abu al-Za'ra'" ('Abdullah bin Hani' al-Kindi, the maternal uncle of Salamah bin Kuhayl), for his nephew Salamah is alone in narrating from him; but he has been corroborated. And "Muhammad bin Ibrahim bin Awramah", although majhul, is not alone in this.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: For al-Mu'afa bin 'Imran narrated it in his book "al-Zuhd" (14) from Sufyan al-Thawri with this same chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It was also narrated from Sufyan by Waki', in Ibn Abi Shaybah's "al-Musannaf" (5/320) and Ibrahim al-Harbi's "Gharib al-Hadith" (3/1186), and by 'Abdullah bin Wahb, in Nu'aym bin Hammad's "al-Fitan" (216).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, Waki' paired "Malik bin Mighwal" with Sufyan, and Ibn Wahb confined himself to only the second half of the report.
Details of the narration: Its first half was narrated by al-Mu'afa (13) (and by way of him Abu 'Amr al-Dani in "al-Sunan al-Waridah fi al-Fitan" (181)) from Sharik al-Nakha'i, from 'Abdullah bin Yazid al-Suhbani, from Kumayl bin Ziyad, from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him).
Grading: Sharik is "hasan" in corroborations and supporting reports, and the narrators above him are thiqah.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Something similar has been narrated from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) as marfu', attributed to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), with a "very weak" chain in the Musnad of al-Bazzar (1461), al-Tabarani (9777) and others.
