أخبرنا أبو بكر الشافعي، حدثنا محمد بن مَسلَمة الواسطي، حدثنا يزيد بن هارون، أخبرنا حمَّاد، عن (2) عليِّ بن زيد، عن أَوس بن خالد، عن أبي هريرة، عن النبي ﷺ قال: "تخرجُ الدابةُ ومعها عصا موسى وخاتَمُ سليمان، فتَجلُو وجهَ المؤمن بالعصا، وتَخطِمُ أنفَ الكافر بالخاتَم، حتى إنَّ أهل الخِوَانِ يجتمعون، فيقول هذا: يا مؤمنُ، وهذا: يا كافرُ" (3).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Beast of the Earth (Dabbat al-Ard, the creature that will come out of the earth) will appear, having with it the staff of Musa (peace be upon him) and the ring of Sulayman (peace be upon him). It will make the face of the believer shine with the staff and brand the nose of the disbeliever with the ring, so much so that when the people sitting around a dining spread gather, they will address one another with these words: O believer! and O disbeliever!"

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts this word has been corrupted into "بن".
(3) إسناده ضعيف لضعف علي بن زيد - وهو ابن جُدْعان - وجهالة شيخه أوس بن خالد، ومحمد بن مسلمة ليِّن الحديث إلَّا أنه متابع.
Grading: Its chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The cause of weakness is the weakness of "'Ali bin Zayd" (Ibn Jud'an) and the unknown status of his shaykh "Aws bin Khalid". Also, "Muhammad bin Maslamah" is layyin al-hadith (weak), but he has been corroborated.
فقد أخرجه أحمد في "مسنده" 13/ (7937) عن يزيد بن هارون، بهذا الإسناد. وأخرجه أحمد أيضًا 13 / (7937) و 16 / (10361)، وابن ماجه (4066)، والترمذي (3187) من طرق عن حماد بن سلمة به.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: For Imam Ahmad narrated it in "al-Musnad" (13/7937) from Yazid bin Harun with this same chain. Imam Ahmad also narrated it (13/7937) and (16/10361), as did Ibn Majah (4066) and al-Tirmidhi (3187), through various routes from Hammad bin Salamah.
قوله: "تجلو وجه المؤمن" أي تنوّره، و"تخطم أنف الكافر" أي: تَسِمُه وتكويه، والخِوان: هو ما يوضع عليه الطعام.
Note / Clarification: The phrase "تجلو وجه المؤمن" means it will make the face of the believer shine; "تخطم أنف الكافر" means it will mark and brand the nose of the disbeliever; and "الخِوان" is the tray (or spread) on which food is placed.
