Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8701

It is narrated from Abu al-Tufayl that he said: We were sitting with Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) when the Beast of the Earth (Dabbat al-Ard) was mentioned. Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: It will first appear in some of the desert regions and then hide. Then it will appear in some of the towns until the people are terrified and the rulers shed blood over its matter (because of the turmoil). Then it will go into hiding. Then, while the people are at the greatest, most excellent and most noble mosque (the narrator said: until we supposed it was al-Masjid al-Haram, though he did not name it), the ground will suddenly split and rise. The ground will rise up and the people will flee, but a large body of Muslims will remain there, saying: Nothing can save us from the decree of Allah. Then the beast will come out and make their faces shine like radiant stars. Then it will remain among the people (in such a way) that they will be neighbours in their homes, partners in wealth and companions to one another on journeys.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The manuscripts have "تتمكن"; the correction is from "Talkhis al-Mustadrak".
Note / Clarification: "تتكمَّن" means: to hide from sight.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): The manuscripts have "يذعروه", while the correct reading is what we have established (in the text).

Technical note / Defect ('illah): It appears that some text has dropped out here in our manuscripts. In the sources of takhrij (and the closest of them in wording to the author's narration is that of al-Fakihi (2344)) the words are: "Then it (the Beast) will pursue the people, brand the nose of the disbeliever and make the face of the believer shine; then no one who flees will escape it and no one who pursues will catch it. They said: O Hudhayfah, how will the people be on that day? He said: Neighbours", etc.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts this word has been corrupted into "في الإسلام"; the correction is from all the sources of takhrij.
Grading: The narrators of the chain of this report are thiqah, but it is not established that "Qays bin Sa'd" (who is al-Makki) heard from "Abu al-Tufayl". 'Ali bin al-Madini, as stated in "Jami' al-Tahsil", counted him among those who did not meet any Companion, while Abu al-Tufayl 'Amir bin Wathilah is one of the younger Companions.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by 'Abd al-Razzaq in "al-Tafsir" (2/84); by Nu'aym bin Hammad in "al-Fitan" (1868) by way of Ma'mar; by al-Bukhari in "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (5/391-392) by way of 'Ubaydullah bin 'Adi al-Kindi; by al-Fakihi in "Akhbar Makkah" (2344) by way of Fudayl bin 'Iyad; and by al-Mustaghfiri in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (404) by way of Qurrah bin Sulayman. All four of them narrate it from Hisham bin Hassan with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, in the narration of Ibn al-Mubarak and Muhammad bin Thawr from Ma'mar (which is in Nu'aym's "al-Fitan"), Ma'mar did not name his shaykh, while in the narration of 'Abd al-Razzaq he named him. Al-Bukhari mentioned only the opening part in his "Tarikh", and in its printed edition the name "Qays bin Sa'd" has been corrupted and printed as "'Amir bin Sa'd".
Reference / Source: Abu Sufyan al-Ma'mari narrated it from Ma'mar in al-Tabari's "Tafsir" (20/14), and he dropped Hisham bin Hassan (from the middle of the chain)!
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari also narrated it by way of "Furat al-Qazzaz" and "Wasil the mawla of Abu 'Uyaynah", both of them from Abu al-Tufayl, with this same chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is weakness in both of these routes, though the route of Furat is relatively the better of the two.
