Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8700

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sarihah al-Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Beast of the Earth (Dabbat al-Ard) will appear three times. The first time it will come out in the farthest part of Yemen, and mention of it will spread in the countryside, but news of it will not reach the town (Makkah). Then, while the people are in the most sacred place in the sight of Allah and the most beloved to Him, namely al-Masjid al-Haram, it will suddenly appear in a corner of the mosque; it will come out from the area between the Black Stone and the Gate of Banu Makhzum. The people will scatter here and there, but a group of Muslims will stand firm, knowing that they cannot escape Allah. The beast will come before them, shaking the dust off its head; it will begin with them (speaking to them) and will make their faces shine until they are radiant like glittering stars. Then it will set off through the earth; no seeker will be able to catch it and no one who flees will escape it, so much so that a man will seek refuge from it (out of fear) in prayer, and it will come to him from behind and say: O so-and-so! Now you pray?! He will turn towards it, and it will put a mark on his face and go away. So the people will be neighbours to one another in their homes, companions on their journeys and partners in wealth, (yet) the believer will recognise the disbeliever (by the mark), so much so that the disbeliever will say: O believer! Give me my right; and the believer will say: O disbeliever! Give me my right."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, and it is the clearest hadith concerning the Beast of the Earth (Dabbat al-Ard), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "very weak".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): "Talhah bin 'Amr al-Hadrami" is matruk al-hadith, and al-Dhahabi in "al-Talkhis" declared it defective for this very reason. This Talhah is alone in narrating it as marfu' and in some of its wording. Clarification of names: "Abu al-Tufayl" refers to 'Amir bin Wathilah, and "Abu Sarihah" refers to Hudhayfah bin Asid.
Reference / Source: Abu Ishaq al-Tha'labi narrated it in his "Tafsir" (7/223), and by way of him Abu Muhammad al-Baghawi also in his "Tafsir" (6/178), through 'Amr bin Muhammad al-'Anqazi, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Nu'aym bin Hammad narrated it in "al-Fitan" (1851) (and by way of him al-Fakihi in "Akhbar Makkah" (2345) and al-Tabarani in "al-Ahadith al-Tiwal" (34)) from 'Abdullah bin Wahb; and al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Mu'jam al-Kabir" (3035) by way of al-Fadl bin al-'Ala'. Both of them (Ibn Wahb and al-Fadl) narrate it from Talhah bin 'Amr with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tayalisi (1165), and by way of him Ibn Abi Hatim in his "Tafsir" (9/2923), narrated it from Talhah bin 'Amr with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tayalisi also narrated it from Jarir bin Hazim, from 'Abdullah bin 'Umayr, from a "man" of the family of 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): He did not take it any further (i.e. the chain is cut off), so this chain is "mursal" and its narrator is "unnamed" (mubham); therefore it is not authentic.
Reference / Source: 'Abd al-Malik bin Habib al-Andalusi narrated it in the book "Ashrat al-Sa'ah" (23) from al-Uwaysi ('Abd al-'Aziz bin 'Abdullah), from 'Abdullah bin 'Ubayd, from his father, from Abu al-Tufayl, from Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him), as "mawquf" (he mentioned the long hadith). Then he said: Asad bin Musa narrated to me, from Jarir bin Hazim, from Qays bin Sa'd, from Abu al-Tufayl, from Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), the like of it.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): As for this narrator "Ibn Habib", Ibn Hajar said about him in "al-Taqrib": "He is saduq, but weak in hadith and makes many mistakes (kathir al-ghalat)."
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Awsat" (1635) by way of Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah, from Ibn Jurayj, from 'Abdullah bin 'Ubayd bin 'Umayr, from Abu al-Tufayl, from Hudhayfah bin Asid (may Allah be pleased with him); (the narrator said:) I think he narrated it as marfu', saying: "The Beast (Dabbat al-Ard) will emerge from the most sacred of mosques. While the people are sitting, the earth will resound, and while they are in that state, it will split open."
Grading: The narrators of this chain are thiqah, but it contains the 'an'anah of Ibn Jurayj, who was a "mudallis"; and the narrator also had doubt about its being "marfu'". See also the next hadith.
