Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8693

It is narrated from Muhammad bin Ziyad that when (Sayyiduna) Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) took the pledge of allegiance for his son Yazid, Marwan said: "This is the Sunnah (way) of Abu Bakr and Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both)." Thereupon Abdul Rahman bin Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "Rather, it is the Sunnah of Heraclius and Caesar." Marwan said (sarcastically): This is the one about whom Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "And the one who said to his parents: Fie upon you both" [Surah al-Ahqaf: 17]. When this reached Sayyidah Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), she said: "By Allah! Marwan has lied; it is not about him. Rather, the truth is that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) cursed Marwan's father (al-Hakam) while Marwan was still in his loins, so Marwan is a portion of that curse of Allah Almighty."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain would be "jayyid" (good) were it not for the defect that al-Dhahabi pointed out in "al-Talkhis", namely the break (inqita') between Muhammad bin Ziyad (who is al-Jumahi, their freed slave (mawla), al-Madani) and 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her). Al-Dhahabi said: Muhammad did not hear from 'A'ishah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We (the editors) say: although he did live in the time of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), this narration may be mursal, because (the fact is that) 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) died about four years before his sister 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her).
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (11427) narrated it from 'Ali bin al-Husayn al-Dirhami with this same chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Hammad bin Salamah also narrated it from Muhammad bin Ziyad. For Abu al-Qasim al-Baghawi narrated it in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (1880) from Ibn 'A'ishah ('Ubaydullah bin Muhammad al-'Ayshi), and Ibn Abi Khaythamah in the third volume of his "Tarikh" (1785) from Musa bin Isma'il al-Tabudhaki, both of them from Hammad bin Salamah, with this same chain.
Details of the narration: However, Ibn 'A'ishah did not mention in his hadith the story of "the cursing of Abu Marwan (al-Hakam)".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: In narrating this report, "Muhammad bin Ziyad" was corroborated by Yusuf bin Mahak, in al-Bukhari's "Sahih" (4827), and by 'Abdullah al-Bahi (the mawla of al-Zubayr), in al-Bazzar's "Musnad" (2273).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, "al-Bahi" made the whole narration the account of 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Bakr and did not mention 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) in it, and his narration from 'Abd al-Rahman is mursal. As for Yusuf bin Mahak, he did not mention in it the story of "the cursing of Abu Marwan".
Note / Clarification: "فَضَضٌ" means: a piece, and a group.
