Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is weak because the standing of Abu Hamzah is unknown. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Hamzah refers to "'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abdullah al-Mazini", the neighbour of Imam Shu'bah; he is alone in this narration, whereas he is fit to be accepted only in corroborations and supporting reports. Reference / Source: This narration is in the "Musnad of Ahmad" (33/19775) in the transmission of Ahmad bin Ja'far al-Qati'i, from 'Abdullah bin Ahmad, from his father (Imam Ahmad), but he did not mention "Banu Umayyah" in it. Reference / Source: Like the author's (al-Hakim's) narration, it was narrated by Abu Ya'la (7421) from Ahmad bin Ibrahim al-Dawraqi, and by al-Ruyani (769) by way of Yahya bin Ma'in, both of them from Hajjaj bin Muhammad, with this same chain. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there are also narrations from 'Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) in al-Tirmidhi (3943) and al-Tabarani's "al-Kabir" (18/572), but both chains are weak and not authentic. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Also, from 'Abdullah bin al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) in Abu Ya'la (6820) this marfu' saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is narrated: "And the worst of the tribes of the Arabs are Banu Umayyah, Banu Hanifah and Thaqif", but its chain is weak. Important point: Nothing (no hadith) on this topic reaches the level of authenticity.
