It is narrated from Sayyiduna Buraydah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A people will come with small eyes and broad faces, as though their faces were shields, and they will drive the people of Islam to the places where wormwood shrubs grow (the wilderness). It is as though I am looking at them, having tied their horses to the pillars of the mosque." It was said to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! Who are they? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "They are the Turks."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.
And the two Shaykhs agree that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Hour will not be established until you fight the Turks, whose faces are broad, eyes small and noses flat, as though their faces were layered leather shields."

Explanation & Benefits

Note / Clarification: (The narrator's name in the chain) has dropped out of our manuscripts, and we have restored it from Ibn Hajar's "Ithaf al-Maharah" (2313). This was necessary, because Mu'adh bin Najdah is not known to narrate directly from Bashir bin al-Muhajir; rather he narrates from "Khallad" and narrators of his level.
Grading: Its chain is "da'if" because Bashir bin al-Muhajir is alone in narrating it. He is a disputed narrator, but he is weak when he narrates alone or contradicts others. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (38/22951) narrated something similar from Abu Nu'aym al-Fadl bin Dukayn, from Bashir bin al-Muhajir, with this same chain. Details of the narration: Part of it was narrated by Ja'far bin Musafir in Abu Dawud (4305) from Khallad bin Yahya, but he reversed (qalb) the text and stated that the Muslims would drive the Turks back to the places where "shih" grows (i.e. the Arabian Peninsula). Note / Clarification: "الشِّيح" is a plant that grows abundantly there (in Arabia), with a strong, pleasant scent. Note / Clarification: "الحَجَف" refers to shields made only of leather, with no wood in them.

Note / Clarification: In our manuscripts this word has been corrupted into "ذلف الوجوه". "الذَّلَف" means a short, flat nose, and "الذُّلف" is the plural of "أذلف". "المجانّ المطرقة" refers to shields that have been hammered, meaning they are broad.
