Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8669

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The signs (of the Hour) are like beads strung on a thread; when the thread is cut, they follow one after another." Khalid bin al-Huwayrith said: We were sitting in a gathering in the morning, and Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) was there, and there was also a woman of Banu al-Mughirah named Fatimah. She heard Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) say: "That is Yazid bin Mu'awiyah." The woman asked: O Abdullah bin Amr! Do you find it written like this in the Book (the revealed scriptures)? He said: I do not find him by his name, but I find (by description) a man who will be from the family tree of Mu'awiyah; he will shed blood, treat wealth as lawful, and demolish this House (the Ka'bah) stone by stone. If that time comes in my lifetime, so be it; otherwise, remember me. The narrator said: The woman's house was on Mount Abu Qubays. When the time of al-Hajjaj and Ibn al-Zubayr (may Allah be pleased with him) came and she saw the House being demolished, she said: May Allah Almighty have mercy on Abdullah bin Amr; he had already told us about this.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The marfu' part of this hadith is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (authentic due to supporting reports), and this chain is, if Allah wills, "hasan" on account of "Khalid bin al-Huwayrith al-Qurashi". Three narrators have narrated from him, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat". Yahya bin Ma'in said: "I do not know him", and Ibn 'Adi said: "If Yahya does not know him, then he has no renown and is not known." That is what he said; but in fact this Khalid is a Tabi'i known among the Tabi'un for his companionship (discipleship) with 'Abdullah bin 'Amr. The proof of this is the statement of al-Bukhari in "al-Tarikh" (3/144) on the authority of Ibn 'Awn that: "Muhammad bin Sirin instructed him to ask this Khalid bin al-Huwayrith about what 'Abdullah bin 'Amr had said", and he (Khalid) is a Qurashi.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn 'Awn refers to "'Abdullah bin 'Awn bin Artaban".
Reference / Source: Its marfu' part was narrated by Ibn Abi Shaybah (15/63), Ahmad (11/7040), al-Bukhari in "al-Tarikh" (3/144), al-Ramahurmuzi in "Amthal al-Hadith" (89), and Abu al-Shaykh, also in "Amthal al-Hadith" (264), by way of Hammad bin Salamah, from 'Ali bin Zayd bin Jud'an, from Khalid bin al-Huwayrith. 'Ali bin Zayd is da'if (weak), but he is corroborated by Ibn 'Awn.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The hadith of Anas bin Malik serves as a shahid (supporting report) for this hadith (i.e. for its marfu' part); it will come later with the author (al-Hakim) under number (8853), and its chain is "sahih".
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Likewise the hadith of Abu Hurayrah is a supporting report, narrated by Ibn Hibban (6833) and al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (4271). There is "lin" (softness/weakness) in its chain due to one of its narrators being majhul (unknown).
Note / Clarification: The phrase "كنا نادِينَ" means: we were gathered in the nadi (assembly/gathering).
