Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8668

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Islam will fade away just as the embroidery of a garment fades, until it will no longer be known what fasting, charity and the rites of sacrifice are. The Book of Allah will be taken away in a single night, and not a single verse of it will remain on the earth. Groups of people will remain, among them old men and old women, who will say: We found our forefathers upon this word (La ilaha illallah), so we say it too." Silah bin Zufar said to Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him): When they will not know what fasting, charity and the rites of Hajj are, of what benefit will "La ilaha illallah" be to them? Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) turned away from him. Silah repeated the question three times, and each time Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) turned away. Then, on the third time, he turned to him and said: "O Silah! This word will save them from the Fire; it will save them from the Fire; it will save them from the Fire."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is "sahih as mawquf", and this chain is "sahih", its narrators being on the whole trustworthy.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, although "Abu Mu'awiyah" (Muhammad bin Khazim al-Darir) is the one with the best memory for the hadith of al-A'mash, he sometimes errs in the hadith of others, and this narration is one of those, since there is disagreement over him as to whether he narrated this hadith as marfu' or mawquf.
Details of the narration: Thus Abu Kurayb (Muhammad bin al-'Ala') narrated it from Abu Mu'awiyah as "marfu'" (with the author here, and with al-Bazzar in his "Musnad" (2838) and al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (1870)), as did Ahmad bin 'Abd al-Jabbar (with the author, later at 8850) and 'Ali bin Muhammad al-Tanafisi (with Ibn Majah, 4049).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Whereas Nu'aym bin Hammad contradicted all of them and narrated it in "al-Fitan" (1665) from Abu Mu'awiyah as "mawquf".
Details of the narration: It was also narrated as "mawquf" from Abu Malik al-Ashja'i (Sa'd bin Tariq) by other narrators, among them: Muhammad bin Fudayl in "al-Du'a'" (15) - and this will come with the author later at (8753) -, Khalaf bin Khalifah in al-Lalaka'i's "Usul al-I'tiqad" (577) and al-Khatib's "Tarikh Baghdad" (2/ 290), Ishaq bin Abi Yahya (who is one of the halka, i.e. severely weak narrators) in Abu 'Amr al-Dani's "al-Fitan" (419), and Abu 'Awanah al-Yashkuri (in the narration of Abu Kamil al-Jahdari from him) with al-Bazzar (2839).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Busiri, in "Misbah al-Zujajah", cited it from the "Musnad" of Musaddad via Abu 'Awanah from Abu Malik, with its text joined to the narration of Ibn Majah, from which it is understood that with Musaddad this narration from Abu 'Awanah is "marfu'", and Allah the Exalted knows best.
Important point: Even though this report is "mawquf", something like this cannot be said on the basis of opinion and reasoning (as to what will happen in the future), so it has "the ruling of marfu'".
Note / Clarification: The phrase "yadrusu al-Islam" means: the traces and marks of Islam will be effaced.
Note / Clarification: "Washy al-thawb" means the patterns (embroidery) of a garment.
