Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8663

It is narrated from Ma'mar (may Allah have mercy on him) that one of our shaykhs related that a woman came to one of the pure wives of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said to her: "Pray to Allah that He heals my hand." She asked: "What has happened to your hand?" She said: "I had parents. My father was very wealthy, generous, virtuous and given to charity, but my mother was completely devoid of these qualities. I never saw her give anything in charity, except that once we slaughtered a cow and she placed a piece of fat in the hand of a poor man and clothed him in an old rag. Then my mother and my father both died. In a dream I saw my father at the bank of a river giving people water to drink. I asked: 'Father! Have you seen my mother?' He said: 'No; has she died?' I said: 'Yes.' So I went to search for her, and I saw her standing naked with nothing on her body except that same old rag, and in her hand was that same piece of fat, which she was striking against her other hand and then licking its trace, saying: 'Oh, my thirst!' I said: 'Mother! Shall I not give you water to drink?' She said: 'Certainly.' So I went to my father and mentioned this to him, took a vessel from there and gave her water to drink. Then someone standing near her called out: 'Whoever gave her water to drink, may Allah paralyse his hand.' Then I woke up, and my hand had become paralysed."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "wahin" (extremely weak), as al-Dhahabi said in "al-Talkhis", because it contains ibham (an unnamed narrator) and i'dal (a severe break). It is found in Ma'mar's "al-Jami'" (20768).
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (3226) from Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim (the author) with this same chain.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Dhahabi said in "al-Talkhis": what is meant (by its being sahih) is the report of Abu Hurayrah; as for the "dream", its chain is "wahin" (weak).
