Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8662

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "Indeed, I know of a trial compared with which the trials before it will be (as trivial) as a single leap of a hare (nafjat arnab), and I also know the way out of that trial." We said: "What is the way out of it?" He said: "I will hold back my hand until the one who kills me comes."

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih".
Reference / Source: This narration is found in Ma'mar's "al-Jami'" (in the narration of 'Abd al-Razzaq, 20767). Nu'aym bin Hammad also narrated it from 'Abd al-Razzaq in "al-Fitan" (345).
Reference / Source: Ishaq bin Rahawayh narrated it in his "Musnad" (532) via Mu'ammal bin Isma'il, from Yazid bin Zuray', from al-Hajjaj bin Abi 'Uthman, from Yahya bin Abi Kathir, from al-'Abdi, from Abu Hurayrah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This "al-'Abdi" is actually "Abu Nadrah al-Mundhir bin Malik bin Qut'ah", who is trustworthy. But mentioning him in the chain in place of "Abu Salamah bin 'Abd al-Rahman" is a "takhlit" (confusion) of Mu'ammal bin Isma'il, because he had a poor memory, and Allah the Exalted knows best.
Note / Clarification: The phrase "ka-nafjat arnab" means: like the leap of a hare from its resting place. Ibn al-Athir says in "al-Nihayah": what is meant is the shortness of its (the trial's) duration.
