Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8658

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Barzah al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "Indeed, that man who is in Sham (meaning Marwan), by Allah, is fighting only for this world; and that man who is in Makkah (meaning Ibn al-Zubayr), by Allah, he too is fighting only for this world; and those whom you call your reciters (the pious), by Allah, they too are fighting only for this world." (Abu al-Minhal's) father asked him: "Then what do you command us to do at this time?" He said: "In my view, the best of people is a group that clings to the ground in seclusion (and he gestured with his hand), whose stomachs are empty of people's wealth and whose backs are light of (the burden of) shedding their blood."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts this name was corrupted and written as "Hakim".

Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts it is "wa-inna alladhi tad'unahu", whereas the text we have established is taken from al-Dhahabi's "al-Talkhis", and it is the correct, usual form (al-jaddah).

Note / Clarification: The text is like this in "al-Talkhis", and this is correct, as it occurs in the narration of Ya'qub bin Sufyan from 'Abdan in al-Bayhaqi's "al-Sunan" (8/ 193). In the manuscripts it was corrupted into "Ibn", and in manuscript (K) there is also an erroneous addition of "'Umar" after it!

Grading: Its chain is "sahih".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu al-Muwajjih is "Muhammad bin 'Amr al-Fazari", 'Abdan is "'Abd Allah bin 'Uthman al-Marwazi", 'Abd Allah is "Ibn al-Mubarak", 'Awf is "Ibn Abi Jamilah al-A'rabi" and Abu al-Minhal is "Sayyar bin Salamah al-Riyahi".
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (7112) narrated it, with an addition at its beginning, via the route of Abu Shihab 'Abd Rabbih bin Nafi' al-Hannat from 'Awf al-A'rabi with this same chain, but without these words at its end: "My father said to him … etc."
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (33/ 19805) narrated it similarly via Sukayn bin 'Abd al-'Aziz from Abu al-Minhal.
Note / Clarification: "Al-'isabah al-mulbidah" means a group that clings to the ground and keeps itself obscure (i.e. keeps a low profile).
Note / Clarification: "Khimas al-butun" means: those with empty stomachs. This is a metaphor for refraining from consuming the wealth of the Muslims unjustly (and for piety).
