Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8652

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "A trial is presented to the hearts. Whichever heart rejects it, a white spot is placed in it, and whichever heart does not reject it, a black spot is placed in it. Then another trial is presented to the hearts. If the heart that rejected the first time rejects it (again), a further white spot is placed in it, and the one that does not reject it, a black spot is placed in it. Then a third trial is presented to the hearts. If the one that rejected the first two times rejects it (still), that heart becomes firm, white and pure, and no trial will ever harm it. But if it did not reject the first two times, that heart becomes black, dusky in colour and turned upside down; then it neither recognises any good nor rejects any evil."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The portion from the words "ishtadda wa-bayadda" up to here is missing (dropped) from manuscripts (K) and (M).

Grading: This hadith is "sahih" as marfu', and the narrators of this chain are on the whole "thiqah" (trustworthy).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, the mention in it of "from Nubayt bin Sharit" is a "dhuhul" (lapse) by some of its narrators, and it may be from the author himself, because Nubayt bin Sharit is a junior Companion and no narration of Salim from him is known; rather, he narrates from another person named Nubayt whose lineage is not given. Whatever the case, this hadith is "mahfuz" (preserved) from Hudhayfah as marfu' through other routes; however, we did not find this route of Salim from Nubayt with anyone other than the author.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (38/ 23280, 23440) and Muslim (144) narrated it similarly via the route of Rib'i bin Hirash from Hudhayfah, as marfu' to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Note / Clarification: "Irbadda" means: it changed to "rubdah" (a blackish colour), which is a colour between black and dusty grey. Ibn al-Athir says in "al-Nihayah": what is meant here is the blackening of the heart in the figurative sense, not in outward form, because the colour of the heart is blackish anyway.
