Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8608

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: A time will come upon the people when a man will come to a grave, lie down on it and say: If only I were in the place of the one in this grave! He will not say this out of longing to meet Allah, but because of the severity of the trials and afflictions he will be seeing (in the world).
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: It is "sahih li-ghayrihi", and it is a mawquf narration.
Technical analysis: Muhammad bin Ibrahim bin Awramah is a majhul narrator, but he is not alone in it. This report has two chains: (1) The first: Sufyan (al-Thawri), from al-A'mash, from Ibrahim (al-Nakha'i), (probably) from Ibn Mas'ud. Ibrahim al-Nakha'i often narrates from Ibn Mas'ud in mursal form, and he did not meet him. (2) The second: Sufyan, from Salamah bin Kuhayl, from Abu al-Za'ra' (Abd Allah bin Hani' al-Kindi), from Ibn Mas'ud. This chain is connected. The narrators of both chains are thiqah except Abu al-Za'ra', from whom only his nephew (sister's son) Salamah bin Kuhayl narrated; Ibn Sa'd, al-Ijli and Ibn Hibban declared him thiqah, while al-Bukhari mentioned him in "al-Tarikh" 5/ 221 and said: "He is not corroborated in his hadith."
Summary: In any case, the marfu' narrations contain what makes this (mawquf narration) unnecessary, as will come.
Takhrij: This report of Ibn Mas'ud was also recorded by Nu'aym bin Hammad in "al-Fitan" (143) from Abd al-Rahman bin Mahdi and Waki', and by al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (9749) via Abu Nu'aym; all three of them narrate it from Sufyan al-Thawri, from Salamah bin Kuhayl.
Supporting reports (marfu'): It is authentically established from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), as marfu', that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The world will not pass away until a man passes by a grave and rolls about on it and says: Would that I were in the place of the occupant of this grave; and it will not be religion that moves him, only affliction." Muslim (2908) (53 - 54) recorded it. The wording in Ahmad 16/ (10866) is: "(the reason for this wish) will not be love of meeting Allah (but trial)."
