Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8606

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: Soon neither a dirham nor any grain (qafiz) will come to the people of Iraq. The people asked: O Abu Abdullah! For what reason will that be? He said: Because of the non-Arabs; they will stop it. Then he remained silent for a little while and said: Soon neither a dinar nor any grain (mudd) will come to the people of Syria. The people asked: For what reason will that be? He said: Because of the Romans; they will stop it. Then he said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There will be a caliph in my Ummah who will give out wealth in handfuls and will not count it." Then he said: By the One in whose hand is my soul! This matter (the religion) will certainly return just as it began; every believer will return to Madinah just as it began from there, until all faith is gathered in Madinah. Then he said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No one leaves Madinah out of aversion to it except that Allah brings in his place someone better than him. And some people will hear news of prosperity, plenty and low prices, and they will follow it (leaving Madinah), whereas Madinah is better for them, if only they knew."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Muslim, but they did not record it with this wording. Imam Muslim only recorded the narration of Dawud bin Abi Hind from Abu Nadrah, from Abu Sa'id, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "At the end of time there will be a caliph who will give out wealth and will not count it", and there is a hidden defect ('illah) in it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Correction and identification: In the manuscripts the word "bin" has been corrupted and written as "an". The narrator from al-Jurayri here is Abd al-Wahhab bin Ata' al-Khaffaf.

Grading: The hadith is sahih, and this chain is "strong" because of Yahya bin Abi Talib and his shaykh Abd al-Wahhab bin Ata'; both of them are "saduq", there is no harm in them, and both have been corroborated.
Takhrij: It was narrated in full by Abu Tahir in "al-Mukhallisiyyat" (1235-1237) and by al-Bayhaqi in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 6/ 330-331 via routes from Abd al-Wahhab bin Abd al-Majid al-Thaqafi, from Sa'id al-Jurayri, from Abu Nadrah, from Jabir bin Abd Allah.
Technical note: Abd al-Wahhab al-Thaqafi is a "thiqah" narrator, and he is among those who heard from Sa'id al-Jurayri before his memory deteriorated (ikhtilat).
Takhrij: The first part of the hadith was recorded by Ahmad 22/ (14406), Muslim (2913) (67) and Ibn Hibban (6682) via Isma'il bin Ibrahim - who is Ibn Ulayyah - from Sa'id al-Jurayri, with this same chain.
Explanation and supporting reports: Jabir's statement in this hadith, "Soon the people of Iraq...", has come in meaning as marfu' from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in the hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) in Muslim (2896) and others, with the wording: "Iraq will withhold its qafiz and its dirham, Syria will withhold its mudd and its dinar, Egypt will withhold its ardabb and its dinar, and then you will return to where you began (he said it three times)."
Further supporting reports: As for the statement "The matter will return just as it began", its meaning is also in the previous hadith of Abu Hurayrah, and in his marfu' hadith in al-Bukhari (1876) and Muslim (147): "Indeed faith will retreat (ya'rizu) to Madinah just as a snake retreats into its hole." And in the hadith of Ibn Umar in Muslim (146): "Islam began as something strange and will return to being strange as it began, and it will retreat between the two mosques (Makkah and Madinah) just as a snake retreats into its hole."
Linguistic note: "Al-qafiz" is a well-known measure of the people of Iraq, with a capacity of 12 sa' or (by present reckoning, approximately) 33 litres.
Linguistic note: "Al-rif" is land with crops and fertility.

Details of the narration: In Sahih Muslim (2914), in the narration of Abd al-Warith bin Sa'id, Dawud bin Abi Hind combined Abu Sa'id (al-Khudri) with Jabir (as narrator).

Technical note (defect): By the defect here is meant the doubt that occurs in the narration of Abd al-Wahhab about the name of the Companion: is he Abu Sa'id al-Khudri or Jabir bin Abd Allah? However, this is not a damaging defect ('illah qadihah), and it is better not to call it a defect at all, since disagreement over the name of the Companion does not harm the hadith in any way, for all of them are "trustworthy and upright". Furthermore, Abd al-Warith bin Sa'id contradicted Abd al-Wahhab (the narrator with the doubt) and narrated it from Dawud bin Abi Hind combining both Companions (Jabir and Abu Sa'id), not with doubt, as will come.
