أخبرنا أبو العباس محمد بن أحمد المحبوبي، حدثنا سعيد بن مسعود، أخبرنا يزيد بن هارون، أخبرنا سعيد بن إياس الجريري، عن أبي العلاء بن الشِّخِّير، عن عبد الرحمن بن صُحَار العبدي، عن أبيه قال: قال رسول الله ﷺ: "لا تقوم الساعة حتى يُخسَفَ بقبائل من العرب، فيُقال: مَن بقي من بني فلان؟ " قال: فعرفتُ حين قال: "قبائل"، أنها العرب؛ لأنَّ العجمَ تُنسب إلى قُرَاها (2).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يخرجاه.

Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Suhar al-Abdi narrates from his father that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The Hour will not be established until tribes of the Arabs are swallowed up by the earth, so much so that people will ask (in astonishment): 'Who is left of Banu so-and-so?'" (The narrator says:) When he (peace and blessings be upon him) used the word "tribes", I understood that the Arabs were meant, because non-Arabs are attributed to their villages and towns.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(2) إسناده محتمل للتحسين من أجل عبد الرحمن بن صحار، فقد روى عنه اثنان: ابن الشخير عند المصنف وغيره، وأبو عمران الجَوْني عند الطبري في "تفسيره" 13/ 125، وذكره ابن حبان في "الثقات"، وجهَّله الحسيني في "الإكمال" لأنه لم يقف على راو عنه غير أبي العلاء بن الشخير.
Grading: This chain can possibly be graded hasan because of Abd al-Rahman bin Suhar.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): For two people narrated from him: (1) Ibn al-Shikhkhir (with the author (al-Hakim) and others) and (2) Abu Imran al-Jawni (in al-Tabari's "Tafsir" 13/ 125). Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat", while al-Husayni declared him majhul in "al-Ikmal" because he did not come across any narrator from him other than Abu al-Ala' bin al-Shikhkhir.
وأبو العلاء: اسمه يزيد بن عبد الله بن الشخير.
Note / Clarification: Abu al-Ala' is named Yazid bin Abd Allah bin al-Shikhkhir.
وأخرجه أحمد 33 / (20340) عن يزيد بن هارون، بهذا الإسناد - وليس فيه "من العرب" وإسقاطه هو الصواب ليستقيم مع قوله في آخره: فعرفت أنها العرب.
Reference / Source: It was narrated by Ahmad 33/ (20340) from Yazid bin Harun with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: This narration does not contain the words "min al-Arab" (from among the Arabs), and dropping them is correct, so that it agrees with the statement at the end of the hadith: "fa-araftu annaha al-Arab" (so I recognised that they were the Arabs).
وأخرجه أحمد أيضًا 25/ (15956) عن إسماعيل بن إبراهيم - وهو ابن عليّة عن الجريري، به.
Reference / Source: Ahmad also narrated it in 25/ (15956) from Isma'il bin Ibrahim (who is Ibn Ulayyah), from al-Jurayri, in the same way.
وابن عليّة ممن سمع من الجريري قبل اختلاطه.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Ulayyah is among those who heard from al-Jurayri before his memory deteriorated (ikhtilat).
