Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8562

It is narrated from Ibn Sirin (may Allah have mercy on him) that when the tribulation broke out, not even forty men out of the ten thousand Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) took (an active) part in it, while with Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) there were two hundred and forty-some men from the people of Badr, among them Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub, Sahl bin Hunayf and Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with them).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: It occurs thus in the handwritten manuscripts, which is a mistake; part of the text has dropped out here. In "Jami' Ma'mar" (20735) the wording is: "Not even forty men of them hastened out (i.e. went along)". Ma'mar said: And others (i.e. other than Ibn Sirin) said: Two hundred men set out with him (Ali, may Allah be pleased with him), etc.

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ishaq bin Ibrahim is "Ibn Abbad al-Dabari", the transmitter of "al-Musannaf" from Abd al-Razzaq, and Ayyub is "Ibn Abi Tamimah al-Sakhtiyani".

Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad recorded something similar in "al-Ilal" (4787), and by way of him Abu Bakr al-Khallal in "al-Sunnah" (728), from Isma'il Ibn Ulayyah, from Ayyub, likewise.
