Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8555

It is narrated from Abu Thawr; he said: I came to Sayyiduna Hudhayfah and Sayyiduna Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with them both) while they were engaged in conversation in the mosque. They mentioned tribulation, and Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I did not think that this tribulation would turn back on its heels in such a way that not even a cupping-glass's worth of blood would have been shed in it. And indeed a man will be a believer in the morning and become a disbeliever by the evening, and will be a believer in the evening and become a disbeliever by the morning. He will fight in the tribulation today and tomorrow Allah will kill him. His heart will be turned upside down so that its lower part comes on top." Then Abu Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You have spoken the truth; this is how the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) told us about the tribulation."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it. Abu Thawr is among the senior Tabi'in, and Abu al-Bakhtari lived in the time of Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In manuscript (M) this is distorted into "وابن", whereas the correct form is that he is Abu Mas'ud al-Badri Uqbah bin Amr, whose explanation has already passed under the earlier hadith number (2711).

Details of the narration: In al-Tabarani, in the narration of Muhammad bin al-Nadr al-Azdi from Mu'awiyah bin Amr, there is this addition after it: "So Hudhayfah said: But I know that it (the caliphate/rule) will turn back on its heels without even a cupping-glass worth of blood being shed in it; indeed the man" etc. And this is the correct wording.

Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (Z), (K) and (M) this word is distorted into "قبله", while the established text is taken from manuscript (B).

Grading: Its chain is hasan.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Mu'awiyah bin Amr is "al-Azdi al-Ma'ni", Abu Ishaq al-Fazari is "Ibrahim bin Muhammad bin al-Harith", and Abu al-Bakhtari is "Sa'id bin Fayruz".
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani 17/(703) recorded it from Muhammad bin al-Nadr al-Azdi, from Mu'awiyah bin Amr, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani also recorded it at 17/703 and (704) through two other routes from al-A'mash, likewise.
Note / Clarification: This narration has already passed at number (2701) by way of Shu'bah from Amr bin Murrah.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): The author (al-Hakim) said it thus (as connected), but the correct view is that he (Abu al-Bakhtari) did not reach the time of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Shu'bah and Ahmad bin Hanbal mentioned that Abu al-Bakhtari did not meet Ali bin Abi Talib nor hear from him. Ali died four years after Hudhayfah, and Hudhayfah died at the beginning of his (Ali's) caliphate, in the year 36 AH. This is also the view of al-Bukhari, Abu Zur'ah and others, as in al-Ala'i's "Jami' al-Tahsil" (p. 183).
