Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8556

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A time will come upon people in which a man will be made to choose between helplessness and sinfulness. So whoever lives to see that time should choose helplessness ('ajz: helplessness and seclusion) over fujur (sinfulness)."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it. The elder whom Sufyan al-Thawri did not name in the narration from Dawud bin Abi Hind is Sa'id bin Abi Jabirah.

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The annotation on this has already passed under hadith number (8499), and this narrator is not known.

Grading: Its chain is weak because the narrator from Abu Hurayrah is unnamed (mubham).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): As for Muhammad bin Ibrahim, although he is not known, he has a mutaba'ah (corroboration) here.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Thus Imam Ahmad (13/7744 and 15/9767), al-Hakim in "Ma'rifat Ulum al-Hadith" (p. 28), and Abu al-Qasim bin Bishran in his "Amali" (57) recorded it through several routes from Sufyan al-Thawri with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Nu'aym bin Hammad recorded it in "al-Fitan" (500) and (514), Ibn Rahawayh in his "Musnad" (150), Hannad in "al-Zuhd" (1296), Abu Ya'la in his "Musnad" (6403), al-Hakim in "Ma'rifat Ulum al-Hadith" (p. 28), and al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (7979), "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (6/535), "al-Adab" (357) and "al-Zuhd" (231), through several routes, all of them trustworthy, from Dawud bin Abi Hind.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Some narrators said in it "from a shaykh of Banu Qays", and some added "who was called Abu Umar", while some said "from a shaykh of Banu Rabi'ah bin Kilab". There is no idtirab (inconsistency) in this, because Rabi'ah bin Kilab is in fact a clan (batn) of Qays Aylan bin Mudar.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): All these trustworthy narrators were contradicted by Ash'ath bin Atta', who narrated it from Sufyan al-Thawri, from Dawud, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him). Abu Amr bin Nujayd al-Sulami narrated it in his "Juz'" at number (17) by way of Muhammad bin Humayd al-Razi from Ash'ath. This error is either Ash'ath's own or Ibn Humayd's, because both of them have some defect in their memory. And Ibn Adi mentioned in "al-Kamil" (1/380) that Ash'ath bin Atta' contradicts the trustworthy narrators in chains.
