It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abd al-Rahman bin Qurt (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: I entered the mosque and there was a circle of people (sitting so calmly and silently) as if birds were perched on their heads, and among them was a man narrating hadith; it was Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him). He said: People used to ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about good, and I used to ask him (peace and blessings be upon him) about evil so that I might recognise it and guard myself against it, and I knew that the good would not escape me. He said: I said: O Messenger of Allah! After this good in which we (now) are, will there be any evil? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Hudhayfah! Learn the Book of Allah and act upon what is in it." Then I said: O Messenger of Allah! After this good in which we are, will there be any evil? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Hudhayfah! Learn the Book of Allah and act upon what is in it." Then the third time he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There will be tribulation and discord." I said: O Messenger of Allah! After that evil, will there be any good? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Hudhayfah! Learn the Book of Allah and act upon what is in it." I said: O Messenger of Allah! After that evil, will there be any good? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Hudhayfah! Learn the Book of Allah and act upon what is in it." I said: O Messenger of Allah! After that good, will there be any evil? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "There will be tribulations at whose gates will stand callers to Hellfire. If you die while biting firmly on the root of a tree, that is better for you than following any one of them."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Note / Clarification: It is thus in manuscript (M), while in the other manuscripts the wording is "فلا تمت".
Note / Clarification: In our handwritten manuscripts this word is distorted into "خدك" or "حدك" (with a kaf at the end); the correction is from al-Dhahabi's "Talkhis". "Al-jidhl" means the root/trunk of a tree.
(422). Grading: This hadith is "hasan" despite an error in its chain, the explanation of which has already passed at number (422).
