Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 8516

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Madinah will be left (deserted) in the best state it has ever been in, and al-awafi, that is, the birds and beasts of prey, will eat its fruits."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs did not record it. Students of knowledge should know that Sayyiduna Hudhayfah bin al-Yaman (may Allah be pleased with him) was the keeper of the secrets of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he used to say: People used to ask the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about good, and I used to ask about evil, lest I fall into it. At times, for some scholarly reason, a particular session of knowledge may remain hidden even from a great scholar; thus the matter because of which the people of Madinah will leave it remained hidden from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), while others besides him came to know it. The two Shaykhs agreed upon the narration of Shu'bah from Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him), in which he said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) informed me of all the events that will take place until the Day of Resurrection. There was nothing about which I did not ask him (peace and blessings be upon him), except that I did not ask what will drive the people of Madinah out of Madinah."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: The hadith is sahih, and this chain has the potential to be graded "hasan" in the presence of corroborating chains and supporting reports.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its narrators are thiqah and well known, except for "the paternal uncle of Ibn Himas", whose biography we could not find; but the one narrating from him (his nephew) is thiqah. Imam Malik recorded this hadith of his in "al-Muwatta'" (2/ 888), so his status is "muqarib" (acceptable), God willing.
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (6773) narrated it through the route of Ahmad bin Abi Bakr, from Imam Malik, with this same chain. And Ahmad (12/ 7193, 14/ 8999), al-Bukhari (1874), Muslim (1389) and Ibn Hibban (6772) narrated it through the route of Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri, from Sa'id bin al-Musayyab, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him). Some narrators also mention in it the story of "the gathering of the two shepherds", which will come with the author (al-Hakim) at number (8904).
Reference / Source: Ahmad (15/ 9067) narrated it through the route of Hammad, from Abu al-Muhazzim, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him). (Note: Abu al-Muhazzim is weak.)

Note / Clarification: This is a portion of a hadith narrated by al-Bukhari (3606, 7084), Muslim (1847) and others, and it has passed with the author at number (391).

Note / Clarification: In our manuscripts this word is "ba'd" (without the lam), which is an error.

Note / Clarification: Perhaps he is alluding to what Yahya bin Abi Kathir narrated from Abu Ja'far al-Mu'adhdhin: that Abu Hurayrah was asked: O Abu Hurayrah, who will drive them out (of Madinah)? He said: "Evil rulers." Ibn Shabbah recorded it in "Tarikh al-Madinah" (1/ 277-278).

Reference / Source: This narration is in "Sahih Muslim" at number (2891 / 24), and Imam al-Bukhari did not record it.
